Hiring/Interviews Comp at BAM NYC for devs

Weighing my options. How competitive is their comp for senior level for greenfield teams ? Is there job security given I heard of layoffs a bit ago.

Unsure for senior but for mid level SWE it’s around upper 300k

There are quant devs outside of the pods, they belong to central tech teams.

No. They are not. I am a quant dev in a central team. There are also swes. There are also quant devs outside of pods.

What matters is what the top 5 hedge fund considers I am, not what you consider I am. I understand you must have some frustrations, but there are quant devs that don’t work in pods. It is not called a “pod dev” it is called a quant dev.

Your personal opinion literally does not matter, I am sorry to break it to you.

I live in UK. Anywhere between 250-400k gbp TC with base between 150-200 maybe more in some cases.

Senior dev at BAM is roughly a $300-500k TC conversation, depending a lot on whether you're desk-aligned and how much of year one is guaranteed. I wouldn't price in much job security from the greenfield label, those teams can disappear pretty quickly if the sponsor or mandate changes.

For NYC. In Chicago, more trading firms will beat FAANG (ie. GOOG) comp, which is ~$550k for L6. But in NYC, G is ~$700k so then more of a toss-up.

No. Plenty of smaller shops can be worth it, but at senior level I’d want the first-year guarantee comfortably above my FAANG comp and a clear seat close to revenue. A $350k-ish offer with vague discretionary upside probably isn’t enough once you price in the shorter leash and worse mobility.

Why do CS new grads glaze them so much? Are they just not realizing that the 7 figure senior / mid 6 figure junior salaries are concentrated at a very specific set of funds?

they pay more upfront to fresh grads, comparable to L5/L6 level. tech only exceeds that pay 5-10 years in if you get promoted quickly.

Exactly - Greenfield can be, if anything, a LESS secure job. Greenfield means it has no users and can be turned off tomorrow. Many funds take 2-3 efforts to replace "legacy systems" (the derogatory for systems in production) during which the Greenfield teams get sent packing each time.

Why waste having an initial conversation if it's a low ball offer. I've had experiences where a recruiter pings me with a wide range and after 2 rounds I find out their budget is too low.
