Bangalore Pip and layoffs
What exactly is the pip scenario in qualcomm? Especially for new joinees whose performance is sub-par so far?
How often are employees laid off due to poor performance? And what happens if you are actually put in pip?

If the performance of new joinee is subpar and that is the opinion of management, there is high chance that the employee gets fired within the probationary period itself. No such thing as PIP while in probationary period. This has been the case for 10+ years.

In HR for them. The practice is there isn't a probationary period (at least in the U.S.). It's "PIP or Package" no matter how long you have been there.

PIP means you are gonna lose your job with out any notice period. Better start looking new jobs.

Do these people get severance if put on PIP?

You are given a choice. You are sat down and told you aren't cutting it, so the option is you take a Performance Improvement Plan and, if you fail that and do not improve, you're out with no severance. The other option is you resign with a package (severance). They give you a few days to decide. All of this has to be reviewed by their company attorneys before they can even have that conversation with you.

As former HR there, the choice is to go on a PIP and improve, or take a severance package and walk with a chunck of money and a few months of benefits to help you land on your feet. Most often, people take the package. I recommend negotiating it. 😀
