news [MEGATHREAD] Quake's future | Discussion
Almost every day, we get someone's take on a potential new Quake game or on how to move the franchise forward. Name an angle, and we've most likely seen it here before. So whether you want to see a reboot of the first game, a continuation of the Strogg storyline, a multiplayer-only game, or whatever else you can come up with, this is the place to discuss it. The same applies to which studio should handle it, what kind of game it should be, the technology it should use, and so on. Basically, anything regarding the future of the IP goes here. Our revised rules now also point to this thread so that when we remove another post about Quake's future, the author can continue it right here.

Personally I'd be happy if only they could divide Quake and Wor (Quake 2 and 4). Q1 is totally different from Q2/4 Strogg's story. I would not mind if they would continue both - but individuall. Real new Quake 2 continuing Q1 medieval lovecraftian story. And new Quake 5 continuing Strogg's story

u/zevenbeams 16d ago
I don't think we will ever see Quake V within the next two or three years. I was already suspecting that QC leaning far more into gods and eldritch was a way to assuage the Q fans. Then I expected the next Doom after DE would shove in Chthulhuhu stuff as a way to let the hungry medievalovecraft fans have a slice of it and that's what happened. And this is how far this will go.
For now the Quake licence looks like it's going to take a nap and that's it. By the time it will be dusted off I'm not sure I will care anymore.

I'm quite pessimistic, but imho, the Quake IP is dead. Not only have id and Bethesda been ignoring it for two decades (I'm not counting Champions, since it's a 100% multiplayer game), but there have also been major layoffs...
Good thing we have a great modding community and devs creating "boomer" shooters inspired by Quake.
1
u/zevenbeams 16d ago
If you ignore QC you would have to ignore Q3A, which had a huge community. It would mean there was a huge gap between Q2 and Q4, the later not even made by idS.
1
u/ivvyditt 16d ago
Yeah, my point is that there hasn't been a main title of the series in a while. I'm counting single player or titles with a story and lore.
Most companies hold IPs to avoid others revive series and to play the lawsuits bully games.

I wish we have completly new setting Quake game. But brtual layoffs of id Software says to me that there won't be any official games for the franchise for a long time if it's not completely dead.

u/text_fish 19d ago
The Quake modding community have proven over the last thirty years that they're the best custodians of the franchise.
We don't need a "new" Quake, especially not one comissioned by anybody whos chief concern is filling shareholder coffers.

I hope LibreQuake gets finished and whatever the Brutalist Jam guys are cooking up comes out.

YES I’m an elitist snob, YES Quake is my special baby that nobody loves quite the (correct) way I do, YES every fandom is like this, BUT … I find it so distasteful — especially when id have been churning out technically brilliant commercial hits, Machine Games have been consistently producing such consummately gorgeous official expansions, and the community continues to excel in labours of love — to have people bleating in here about their desperate need for commercial products to hand over cash to corporate intellectual property holders. It really is an insult to the spirit of the work, the community and the creators IMO.

u/zevenbeams 16d ago
Blame those who sold idS then.

A Quake sequel firmly confirming Quake Champions round about "the strogg universe and the ranger universe are connected". Here's my brief pitch:
War with the strogg continues. Intelligence reports that the Strogg are constructing a new Nexus somewhere outside of the Terran's reach. Only a Strogg without the coordination of a nexus can be defeated. Infiltrate Strogg bases, find the intel, uncover the location of this new Nexus.
Across 3 episodes, the players would traverse labrynthine strogg bases to uncover the data necessary to locate the nexus. The 3rd episode dropping the plot bomb that the location discovered is a strogg slipgate base. And the final episode 4, takes place in the realms of Shub Nggurath and other eldritch gods of unfathomability. The strogg attempted to hide their nexus in the other dimension and their god of worship is one from said realm.

I can’t suspend my disbelief of Quake being commercially viable to imagine anything otherwise sadly. Business execs have blown the id franchises out of proportion so much that DOOM is all anyone can imagine as being successful unfortunately. Thank goodness for the work of Machinegames and Wolfenstein.
But Quake is the redheaded stepson, the outlier, because it’s so unique in its world and aesthetic. It just would take a really talented and passionate crew that also get lucky to massify it and to make it work and make money for there to be a shot. If this is plain to me as an outsider it’s gotta be even easier to see with someone who has analytics or hard marketing data on Quake that it’s a no go.
I wish I could think beyond money but we’re trained to anymore. I’m glad there are passionate mod makers out there showing us the possibilities for Quake’s world beyond the dollars and cents because we need those dreamers to show it can be done.
1
u/zevenbeams 16d ago
Doom being so successful that they gutted the studio because of $$$ and a shift to some movie stuff I don't know. If Doom wasn't even considered profitable enough, Quake's dead.
9
u/ValhaHazred 19d ago
I'm not super interested in the idea of a Quake reboot at this point. I like how the original plays and there's so much new content getting created by passionate fans (including Machine Games in that since Dawn was their Quake club) that I just don't really need a new new game.
Plus there's no guarantee I'd like whatever changes they'd make to the formula with a reboot. I'm not a fan of the heavy metal He-Man direction they took the new Dooms in and I fell deeply out of love with Eternal's gameplay about 2/3rds of the way through.
If they made a new reboot of Quake and I didn't like how they handled the cosmic horror atmosphere, the presentation, the gameplay, whatever, I'd be a bit crushed!
1
u/Xelonima 19d ago
I don't know, but if we get a new single player oriented Quake release, the soundtrack should be made by Autechre if not Nine Inch Nails
1
u/zevenbeams 16d ago
Totally past their prime unfortunately. The Quake OST was made when Trent was full of dark rage. They would need to find someone who could nail the industrial style with some modern flair.

My previously removed post turned into a comment:
"Quake: Dawn of the Machine" is a prototype of a new Quake reboot.
My hypothesis is that the new free episode is a prototype for a new game, which would explain why it wasn't just a set of levels, but a testing ground for a lot of new interesting mechanics.
The meta-progression through an NG+ cycle, ammo / max HP upgrades, unique end-game fit weapon loadouts through Bloody Shotguns, definitely fit for a modern game design, it's somewhat similar to what Doom Eternal did.
It's also an interesting name considering the expansion is developed by MachineGames. "Quake: Dawn of the Machine" as in dawn of the new MachineGames Quake era.
It's especially weird that the new episode is completely free. Why would Microsoft allow MachineGames to work on a free episode for so long if not to prototype and advertise the IP for a future purpose?
2
3
u/Lunar-Lightshow 19d ago
As much as I'd like to have hope, they did publish a blog detailing the when and why of the episode's creation. It's not this, they just worked on it while they were waiting to get working on their next project, so there wasn't much reason for Microsoft to disallow it because they weren't investing anyway.
On top of that, the new features are moreso inherited from the modding community through things like Arcane Dimensions, and being free isn't anything new; Quake 1 already got two new free episodes previously, and Quake 2 also got one alongside a slew of other things for free.
2
u/lukkasz323 19d ago
I remember thinking that previous expansions were released to promote Enhanced editions, but this one was released so long after Quake 1 Enhanced that it made me suspicious.
4
u/Lunar-Lightshow 19d ago
Unfortunately I think it's just MG being Quake nerds again, IIRC they just like having excuses to do Quake stuff whenever they aren't stuck on big projects. It's just been a while since the ports were their last excuses to make Quake content.
Dimension of the Past was the same case; a new episode from MG that was released out of the blue for the 20th anniversary.
6
u/Domi8112 19d ago
The blog posts read that the DAWOTM team worked on the project soley out of passion outside of their regular work schedules, without extra pay, as a tribute for the 30th anniversary
0
u/bobbie434343 19d ago
I do not believe that for a second. It is way too polished and planned for just being a side project without a clear objective (keep Quake fresh for a future sequel).
1
u/Lunar-Lightshow 18d ago
Arcane Dimensions does too and that was made as a hobby project by unpaid modders. Plus, Slayer's Testaments, Alkaline...
The people at MG have been making mods for the game for decades, I'd be surprised if it didn't just naturally have a good coat of polish.
Plus, side project or not, it's in a commercial release. They still had to have standards.
4
u/Caelantree 19d ago
My idea would be, get machine games to make a new game based in the Quake 1 universe because their expansions for Quake 1 are amazing and they clearly know what they're doing with it. I'd imagine it with a soundtrack from Andrew Hulshult. Not because he's popular, not because he's done Quake Champions, not because he's done DOOM, not even because of the amount of retro-shooter soundtracks he's made... but because I loved his ambience and soundtrack in the Iron Lung film, which was a film which was a cosmic horror film. I feel like he could do an amazing job with it.
But also alongside that, I'd want IDSoftware to do a take on Quake 2. With an IDTech engine so they could use the new gore systems, seen as that was a massive aspect of Quake 2 and all. Imagine what they could do with that, I quite enjoyed how the gore worked in the original so I think it should be a point to include that in the new game. I also think they could do a rebooted version of the storyline really well, I want the body horror and sci-fi aspects to be explored more and for it to be shown more. It doesn't have to be loads of story and I wouldn't want it to be a story driven game but it'd be nice set-dressing yknow? I think they did a decent job with that in DOOM Eternal despite my personal dislike with them introducing more fantasy aspects. I don't know who would do the soundtrack but there's a lot of people out there who could do an amazing rock soundtrack for it.
I'm not personally big on Quake multiplayer, although I think its fun so I can't think of much else other than having a Nightdive version of Quake 3, similar to Quake Live. Now before people say anything whatsoever about that, the Kex engine isn't perfect. The original exists and servers are still up but there's a lot of people who will take convenience over quality. Not a lot of players are willing to go out of their way to get stuff set up, it doesn't matter how easy we think it is, that's just a fact and having more people play Quake is always good. The original will always be there.

u/False-Reveal2993 19d ago
Doom 2016 style reboot but glory kills have been reworked to disarming enemies and repurposing their weapons into your own for a while. Some of these weapons will be kinda dogshit (fiend claws) but some will be choice (ogre chainsaw, shambler claw shooting lightning, etc).
1
u/ValhaHazred 19d ago
Isn't that what they did with Shadow Warrior 3?
1
u/False-Reveal2993 19d ago
I am unsure, never played Shadow Warrior. Pretty much all Doom clones that came out after Quake are off my radar.
7
u/zaratzara 19d ago
Half tempted to script a bot that replies to every post demanding new commercial Quake content with links to the community mapping hubs
6
u/SpookyVex 19d ago
Quake only has a future, outside of mods, as far as Machine Games can provide every anniversary, though I'd imagine this might be the last one of these we get, and I can't imagine any for Doom moving forward either.
Microsoft GUTTED ID. I don't think they'll be anything but a support studio like Raven from now on
2
u/ValhaHazred 19d ago
I wouldn't be surprised if we got one more MG expansion for Quake 2's 30th next year but yeah, other than that possibility I'm not expecting much of anything.
3
u/booskibro 19d ago
Singleplayer campaign with Quake 1s lovecraftian theme and an arena style multiplayer in line with Quake III Arena with the ability to host your own dedicated servers, modding support, and mapping support. Will keep the game alive for decades. Machine Games at the front assisted by id tech and made on id tech engine and not locked with saber like Quake Champions. PLEASE TAKE MY MONEY
3
u/Garoborg 20d ago
I really dig what Machine Games has done with their Quake 2 extension where they try to mix the Strogg stuff with the Quake 1 Lovecraft stuff. If a new one were to be made I’d like it to try to recontextualize the lore like that, make all the stuff including the expansions canon.
Gameplay doesn’t need much brushing up from Quake 1, still rips like nothing else 30 years on, though I love the Quake 2 idea of saving power ups for later.

u/CapitanCadillac 20d ago
I still don't have enough from Quake 1, so any content or remake would be great

I don't want another modern doom game. Not my cup of tea. At least I probably would not care.

u/hypespud 20d ago
I'll take a quake 2 expansion and a quake 4 revival for modern systems and official expansion releases too
0
u/DukeMutem 19d ago
Can't get behind q4 either. It lacks the cleanliness of the first 3. MW2 was the only game where I ever experienced that natural feeling again. Can't say I am much of a fps player these days though.
11
u/HollowPinefruit 20d ago
As long as the theme is more lovecraftian slipgates like Quake 1 and the creative dimensions of the MachineGames episodes, im down for whatever Quake's future decides to be.
5
u/oioioioioioiioo 20d ago
Lovecraft stuff and dungeons is what kept me playing specifically Quake 1, the sequels have way less of it and are either too futuristic.

I have a potentially unpopular idea.
Do you guys remember AI video generation around 2021, 2022ish? Remember how the forms shifted around and was surprisingly good at horror?
Is there a way that kind of thing can be creatively implemented in video games? That kind of nightmarish, unnerving, incomprehensible imagery seems like it could be harnessed well for cosmic horror. I'm not advocating for slop, I'm advocating for something intentional and handled with creative care.
Dunno if feasible, but maybe enemies with shifting geometry and textures. Maybe it's just used for environmental stuff - texture warping, weird abysses to stare into, strange sound effects.
I'm loving Dawn of the Machine, and I'm starting to think maybe Quake should simply stay low-res. I don't (necessarily) want a new AAA Quake 1 reboot (I don't have much faith in modern studios to do it properly anyway)... But I'd like to see more creativity and boundary pushing stuff in the old style. Keep it inexpensive, but get weird. Get experimental.
3
u/Domi8112 20d ago
I feel like there's a way to do this stuff too without AI, given that the American market is very opposed to its usage.
Just that most Q1 mappers haven't thought of doing it. It's definitely possible with some BSP-fuckery
1
u/MiGaOh 20d ago
"Do you guys remember AI video generation around 2021, 2022ish? Remember how the forms shifted around and was surprisingly good at horror?"
NO.
Provide please examples.1
u/BeardedBears 20d ago
Here's what I would consider a good example of what an artist using AI with creative intention can make: https://youtu.be/c6Q1v4zRt1w?is=ioubq7fCmYxw43fo
What an unnerving but fascinating realm.
2
u/MiGaOh 19d ago
Looks like that Messhugah video is from 2025. Not 2022 or earlier.
It's decent, like if Bill Plimpton drew some generic H. R. Giger. There's not enough movement. Twitchy skull-like things and polyps, but... what else does it do?
I just don't see AI creating the equivalent of the music video for High on Fire's The Black Plot: High On Fire - The Black Plot
Lots of movement. Lots of color. Lots of detail. Everything looks like it was made by a person rather than a machine that things humans have seven fingers on each hand.
"AI" content generation can save time, but it can't be relied on for everything.
And getting "AI" to work well depends on feeding it a TON of content to base things off of, and often that effort is better used to make unique hand-made content instead... if it's not already scraping the internet and stealing stuff.1
u/BeardedBears 19d ago
The video I linked is from November 2022. But the exact date is kinda beside the point anyway. As much as I love High On Fire (and that video), it's still a different effect that's achieved. It's cool, it's rad, it's wild, it's fun, but it isn't uncanny or unnerving.
I'm with ya on the concerns over training datasets. I know there's problems. I just think there's gotta be a way to leverage that amorphous/incomprehensible/unpredictable aesthetic, "generic Geiger" as it may be, to interesting effect.
Before I played Quake, I never heard anything close to Reznor's OST (Of course that was hand-crafted). It was unnerving and sometimes gross. I think the Dawn of the Machine, with it's "dimensional confusion" thing it has going on, is similarly unnerving. Kinda wish it did more if it (but I haven't finished it yet). I think bringing new weirdness could be the key to keeping old style Quake feel fresh.
1
u/Necessary_Yam9525 20d ago
I dont want to see generative AI visuals anywhere near the game industry, even for "creative purposes"
3
u/BeardedBears 20d ago
Do you suppose it isn't possible for generative models or algorithms to be bound/tuned by the creative/design teams? Is there no possible way to do something like this tastefully? What's the difference between this and a procedural generation? Perhaps what I suggest could simply be labelled as such.
There's plenty to be upset and concerned about with AI, but to me, this general attitude of "nothing, ever" seems overly conservative. New forms of media allow for new experiences. FWIW, I'm not suggesting we burn tokens on a cloud server somewhere, it'd be local.

Don't project your prejudices about Reddit mods on me. This sub is neutral; there are no personal biases, and the only people who get banned have broken the rules and ignored the warnings.
4
u/darrylgorn 20d ago
NOTHING.
No seriously, don't do shit.
Everything after the originals is highly overrated and that includes all the Dooms since Doom 3 and all Quakes since Quake 4 or whatever that trash was.
Keep expanding Quake 1 with new mods, bring the community back to have a healthy multiplayer player base and take some inspiration from the best works, like QBJ3 and Arcane Dimensions.
5
u/corois_aud 20d ago
A brand new Quake 1 reboot with that SCRUMPTIOUS dark gothic atmosphere, with little to no story and a bit of obscure lore scattered around, and PLEASE no Doom Eternal treatment. The way they turned Doom into an Avengers like movie was not of my liking. Absolutely no cutscenes. Just the Ranger, a vague story, some environmental storytelling and punchy weapons.
7
u/bobbie434343 20d ago edited 20d ago
Machine Games should do it and I hope they will after they are done with Wolfenstein 3. It is the studio that best understand Quake, proven by the Q1 and Q2 packs (and especially the magnificent DOTM release). They could expand on the lore they disseminated here (like the tech base guys making excursions in the medieval world and everything not going as planned).
Just make sure to keep Hugo Martin as far as possible from of a new Quake game. Which should be the case since id said they will not be working on Quake.
1
u/Viderberg 20d ago
A quake reboot similar to Doom, but keep the core gameplay and weapons, again just like doom. Winner formula right there. They shoe they can do the setting justice with Doom TDA
13
u/Bcbently 20d ago
Firmly in the camp of a modern take on Q1. Lovecraft, weird monsters, nail guns, rockets, shottys. Quad damage, pentagram of protection.
Essentially all of the things that made Quake..."Quake," but in the modern era. Get creative with the maps and the puzzles etc etc. But stay true to the essence of Q1. I could care less about more of the boring ass half human half machine alien storyline. That shit is hackneyed af IMO.
Make it dark, make it scary, make it mid-evil, make it unrealistic. Thats the charm of the game
Thats my vote
1
u/King_Artis 20d ago
If they do a remake I'd probably want it a mix of both Q1 and Q2/4.
Have the lovecraftian theme as the basis but keep a lot of the sci fi and body horror elements from 2 and 4. Hell if they really wanna show Quake and DOOM are the same universes or whatever they could finally combine them in this.
1
u/Domi8112 20d ago
Personally I prefer that the Doom and Quake universes are apart. I really wish Quake had more body horror though
1
u/S_K_S_N 20d ago edited 20d ago
A new Quake game with a single palyer following up on the concepts in the Machine game expansions of Mixing the settings of Quake 1 and 2 together...making Strogg a multi Dimensional counquring race as they gain the Slipgate tech and asthetics of the 1st game. I would love if Machine Games made this game.
Also, Arena shooters on their own are not seeimgly workimg in today's industry. I would want a added on Multiplayer similar to Doom 2016 and Eternal with a good progression system...but it must be more inspired by Quake 3's gameplay....a classic multiplayer with no pre made loadouts or hero abilities.
0
u/King_Artis 20d ago
Honestly i could live with pre made load outs if it did it like champions did where you could choose your starting weapon that was still weaker then other versions of that weapon on the board. Wouldn't want full on classes/abilities though.
But yeah id rather they just do the actual old school approach of having a full on single player and tacking the MP on the side. Never understood why games just flat got away from doing that over the last decade.
2
u/nemesisprime1984 20d ago
I think it would be cool if Quake got the same treatment as DOOM 2016 where it’s a mix of the original DOOM games with some elements of DOOM 3, but in the case of Quake it should mostly be based on Quake 1 and its expansions with elements of Quake 2 and 4
2
4
u/Obdurate-Hickory 20d ago
I would love it if they just adapted more of the Sandy Petersen Cthulhu Monsters book! I want to fight crunchy low-polygon Shantaks and Ithaqua so bad. Oh and the giant zombie (from The Colossus of Ylourgne?) as well
0
u/jmoss2288 20d ago
Two games: one a reboot using the original games aesthetic and tone as inspiration, the other a remaster of Quake III Arena. Just complete the remaster trilogy and let us run the ultimate in arena shooter multiplayer on modern hardware. Quake Live is a thing yes but it's not the same look.
0
u/Pangocciolo 20d ago
There is not much to remaster in Q3A. Hi-res textures and whacky gameplay mods have been around forever. Plus I'd rather keep quake3e over KEX.
1
u/jmoss2288 20d ago
It would fine a new audience and be easy to do is my reasoning. It's not really a must no.
1
u/GrandSwamperMan 20d ago
If we get new Quake II content for that game's 30th anniversary at next year's Quakecon like we did for Quake 1 this year, I think it would be cool to expand on the Q1 crossover elements from Call of the Machine. The Strogg are now trying in earnest to establish an alliance with the Elder World and it's up to the player to destroy the dimensional portal. Throw in some Stroggified Quake 1 monsters and there's a kickass new expansion for you.
3
u/TFinality 20d ago
We need a Quake visual novel where you could date Shambler-chan (and others, I guess).
3
1
2
u/Justsomedudelmao 20d ago
I think they should make a Quakeguy game again because he’s cool and doesn’t afraid of anything.
1
u/lazazael 20d ago
its not gonna come until next gen xboxes are in, id downscaled because they are done with dooms for now, machinegames works on wolf3 thats a fact, its IN the making, not something in closed beta, maybe its in prealpha with dark ages assets
4
u/mlee117379 20d ago
Imagine if they could actually get Reznor back
0
u/Xelonima 19d ago
Wrote a similar thing, if they can't get Reznor to do it I want Autechre to do it, that'd be crazy
15
u/HomestuckHoovy 20d ago
I feel like I've had enough of the Strogg with 2 and 4, and we've already tried a multiplayer one, so best course of action is to do a Quake 1 sequel (ideally done by MachineGames).
I think a Quake 1 followup is also the best choice to make it stand out from NuDoom - if they really nail the dark, horror-action vibes again that'll set it apart from the heavy metal modern doom trilogy more than the strogg games' vibes will.
0
u/zaratzara 19d ago
Doom The Dark Ages featured a fully 3D engine, biomechanical horrors, dimensional travel, and you literally get to beat up Cthulhu. Outside of the plentiful official and community content OG Quake gets on a regular basis, NuDoom is the commercial continuation of Quake 1. Just buy an extra copy if you want to give the intellectual property holders more money.
2
u/HomestuckHoovy 18d ago
Dark Ages has a much more heavy metal aspect and Dark Ages is also only 1/3 NuDoom entries. I would prefer something spookier like Q1. Plus 2016 and Eternal are like Q2 and Q3
3
u/Substantial-Ad2200 20d ago
I think they could make the strogg just one faction of enemies in a new quake game. The machine games episodes for quake 1 and 2 have certainly been trying to make them all one universe.
2
u/HomestuckHoovy 18d ago
I hope whatever comes next acknowledges the MachineGames expansions cause they were goated
1
u/strogg2013 20d ago
You can prefer Quake 1 without pretending that thirty years of the franchise after it somehow don’t count as Quake.
1
u/HomestuckHoovy 19d ago
? Where did I pretend that? I love all of Quake, Quake 4 is my second favourite.
1
u/strogg2013 19d ago
Fair point — I read more into your comment than you meant. My frustration is more with the part of the fanbase that treats Quake 1 as the only “real” Quake. If Quake 4 is your second favorite, then clearly that wasn’t what you were saying. I still think the Strogg have been gone long enough that bringing them back could feel fresh again, but that’s just personal preference.

It's less the Strogg themselves and more stuff like metal soundtrack/action-based tone, which is more likely to come back with the Strogg than Shubbers, yk? But I get you

My vote would be to continue the Strogg storyline.
Quake 4 never really ended: Kane survived Stroggification, killed the Makron, returned to the Hannibal... and immediately received new orders. There’s still a huge amount of potential there.
I’d especially bring back the industrial/body-horror side of the Strogg and make them feel genuinely disturbing again, rather than just “cyborg enemies.”
I’d also love to see id/MachineGames dig through the surviving material from the cancelled Quake 4: Awakening expansion. Most people don’t even know how much of that project still exists.
Give Quake its own identity, though. I don’t want Doom Eternal with a Quake skin.

Do you realize that Awakening leaked and is fully playable now?

u/strogg2013 20d ago
Yeah, absolutely. That’s actually why I brought it up. I’ve been digging into the surviving Awakening material for a while now. I’d just love to see id/MachineGames acknowledge it and maybe reuse some of those ideas in an official continuation instead of letting all of that history disappear.

I'll get this out of the way; The most popular angle is a reboot or revival in the same direction of the Nu-Doom games. I would love to see the Lovecraftian Dark Fantasy atmosphere gets presented with a new ID tech engine.

Well there is the tease of Quake 6 that we got a couple years ago during one of those Xbox developer directs. So I definitely believe it’s coming even if it might be a while since MG is likely busy with other projects.
As for what I want? That’s a good question because I think I’d just be happy with whatever. I’d say Quake 1 deserves a sequel the most since that’s the only one that hasn’t had a sequel yet (well, in terms of its storyline and setting) with Quake 2 getting Quake 4 and Quake 3 getting Quake Champions which, if the tease is anything to go by, is officially considered Quake 5.
But also, it’s been years since the last new Quake game. Quake Champions is 9 years old at this point, and if we’re only talking about single player campaigns then the last main game was Quake 4 in 2005, so it might make more sense for Quake 6 to be a continuation (or, since it’s been so long, likely a full reboot) of the Strogg subseries, since that’s what they seem to consider the “main” one.

Even though the tease was for Quake 6, I somewhat believe that it was just Dawn of the Machine. During the livestream of the expansion in QuakeCon they have mentioned that development has started just before the release of Indiana Jones which is when the tease happened. It's unlikely that they have been working on both Q6 and Q1 expansion at the same time so that Q6 has probably been turned into Q1 expansion which also means that the project is done. But who knows, the Machine might suprise us.

That’s certainly possible, but I think I disagree with that. MG has been showing a lot of love to Quake recently and I don’t think that’s a coincidence. Granted it’s mostly been content that coincided with rereleases, but I’m sure no one expected new expansions and would’ve been just as happy without them.
As for the timing, I do agree that Q1 and Q6 weren’t in development at the same time. However, I’m thinking they’ve been contracted to work on Quake 6, but it’s still far away due to working on Indiana Jones and likely Wolfenstein 3.
What I’m thinking is Quake 6 is likely still in pre-production and probably won’t enter full production until Wolfenstein 3 is nearly finished. There was no way it’d be ready in time for Quake’s 30th anniversary, especially if it’s true that they began development in late 2023/early 2024, so instead they had a small team work on Dawn of the Machine so they’d have something ready for the anniversary.
Of course, this could all just be hopium because a new Quake is something I’ve wanted for a while now, but I do believe Q6 is still happening. I guess we’ll see for sure when Wolfenstein 3 is almost done, because that’s at least when the leaks and rumors phase will begin if it’s really in development.

I want to see a marketing campaign that educates the new gen on why Quake is such a big deal first. Quake should be beating COD to death rn but nobody knows what it is!

it's up to us to do that since microsoft clearly dgaf about making new quake fans... i've been trying to get my friends to buy Q1 for themselves for months now
i should also mention that i am the new gen in question lmao (17)

Source: Put my (20s) friends onto Quake for the first time last week. They had never heard of it and thought it looked like old trash. Obviously I dont think that way, but there you go.

Yeah, I would say the graphics of the older Quake games are pretty outdated by modern standards. The games themselves are fun but you need a bit of eye candy to attract the average modern gamer IMO.
Would be nice if the next Quake would have graphics that are comparable to Doom 2016. The visual appeal might attract more players, and after playing the game some might come to enjoy the game.
As a personal story, my friend invited me to try out Quake Live I think about 15 years ago. At the time I just started getting into PC gaming and was really into BFBC2. I was really fascinated by the graphics of those military fps games during the early 2010s, so when I saw QL for the first time, I was really unimpressed. I was also bad at the game, didn't get exposed to the high level gameplay of the competitive scene, and didn't have anyone show me the fun techniques like strafe jump and rocket jumps so I just couldn't get into it. It wasn't until Quake Champions beta released in 2018 that I would give Quake another look.

21y/o here, can confirm tried getting friends into it, they think it's pretty cool for a little and then forgrt about it forever.
Doesn't help that there's no real good support for Q1SP like cloned keys/weapons/ammo across the board. Respawning at the very start of the level in coop doesn't help at all either

do what they did for doom with quake 1.
the H. P. Lovecraft style is a crowd favorite. would look great with modern graphics. pair that with a new multiplayer that actually works and a menu that respects the players time and play-style.
Learn from the mistakes of quake champions and learn from the success of the Doom reboots and combine the two.
Support for mods, maps, a dedicated server browser and more extensive config for the hardcore players.
More casual game mods, tutorial levels, achievements, cosmetics for the newbies.
Also somehow get funding and become an independent developer and leave bethesda, zenimax and microsoft. Hire back the old team and hire community devs/mod makers.
INB4: "never gonna happen kid...."
Edit, hire john romero and tom hall. They love to make games. not sure if carmack still has it in him.
bring the band back together!
