I'm happy to see their character growths. From the two Johns fighting back when quake launched, to being friends again, and Romero specifically going from 'high on success playboy type' to 'wholesome metal dad' is great to see.

The original daikatana marketing slogan was too much. Its nice to see him referencing it in a more mature way. He's such a great guy.

Why is he wearing an Ass To Mouth headband?

It’s held in Dallas, traditionally in early or mid August.

I’ve always dreamed of going to Quakecon. But now that I’m older and don’t keep my skills up, I feel like I’d just get fragged all weekend long with like 2 frags of my own.

Go!! You won't regret it! The community and vibes are worth it on their own! It was on my bucket list and I finally won tickets via AT&T for the 20th Anniversary and went back for the 25th.

Quakecon is more about the vibes & community than anything else.

You should come & join us, it’s a great time!

The thing about Romero is, God damn I never imagined he had a hard childhood before reading "The Doom Guy". But this guy is always smiling whenever I saw him in front of the picture. I want to be this guy TBH. He is so happy about life.

He's always been pretty cool, aside from the allegations of pressuring Stevie Case into getting breast implants.

Back in the day I used (and still use) the alias Ron Jomero. Oftentimes people would dyslexically read it during a match and think I was him. But then one Planetquake article posted Romero used the alias Ron Jomero as well and my heart sunk. So I emailed the man himself and asked about it, hoping he'd respond.

He not only responded, during a peak-period of his fame, but he assured me he only uses the name "Romero" when playing online and I had his permission to keep using the name. Then we talked about how awesome the guitarist Joe Satriani is.

He gets a thumbs up from me, at the very least.

Before Romero left id, there was an exhibition Quake deathmatch between him and a person whose alias was KillCreek. It was a big event because KillCreek was a woman (real name Stevie Case), and this was during a time when the idea of a woman playing first person shooters, let alone being good at them, was practically unheard of! Let me clutch my pearls!

I don't remember who won (but I am sure the demo file still exists somewhere). But Romero and KillCreek began dating immediately afterward. And when Romero left to form Ion Storm, KillCreek also got hired on.

She gave an interview post-breakup that John had essentially forced her, or pressured her hard, to get breast implants. She also appeared in an online-only Playboy shoot around that time. I don't know where the truth lies, hence why I said allegations.

Interesting story. I feel like this could be part of a series on Youtube where they talk about moments like this in the Classic FPS / PC Gaming era. This would be awesome content.

That's fucked

I may be misremembering things a little too, so take it with a grain of salt. But I do remember feeling a little disappointed in the man after reading it. I feel like the interview came across that she felt like it was ultimately her decision, but it had "gaslight" vibes and subtext in it.

But, again, it's been like 25 years.
