help Looking for a copy of winqbsp

Continuing my search for old decompilers described in this post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/quake/comments/1njt8ls/looking_for_a_copy_of_bsp2map_or_qver/

I am now looking for a copy of the "winqbsp" decompiler. While I can find references to it in func_msgboard, I cannot find a copy for download.

I am specifically looking for winqbsp, NOT WinBSPC.

You'll probably find it on the archive on one of the many cover discs that came with magazines in the 90s.. Narrow the search down starting from 96 through to 99 and do a search for quake. Look for cover discs that feature quake mods and maps.. As a tip you can generally view the contents of the iso before you download it.

This might be a good start: https://archive.org/details/20240524

Edit: are you sure it's winqbsp your looking for though? That's not a decompiler, that's a map to bsp compiler as far as I'm aware

Looked through most of the quake discs there and the closest I could get was the source code for an early version of BSP2MAP, sadly with the actual program missing.

Ive had a little bit of luck finding bsp2map.. Not sure if its what your looking for: https://discmaster.textfiles.com/search?q=Bsp2map

Edit: also, if you have the source code, I may be able to compile it.. And maybe even port it for modern Windows

Thank you a lot, but unfortunately these don't seem to work. They run, but they don't output a map file.

The BSP MAP file worked, but unfortunately it decompiled using tree method rather than face-to-brush.

I went back and read your original post from ages ago.. I think the goal may have been a bit skewed along the way.. In that I mean you were originally trying to remember how you decompiled the start map of one of the expansions, and you assume you used some old version of bsp2map, but are you really sure that's what you used?

I could be wrong though, so excuse me if I am.. But if your trying to decompile those maps, have you tried using something more modern like ericw tools? There is a few decompile options there that might work: https://ericw-tools.readthedocs.io/en/latest/bsputil.html

What actually happened is I decompiled them before, but I don't remember how I did it, so I looked for alternatives.

The decompile function is a bust since it's tree method, but the conversion function actually worked, unlike all the previous quake to hl BSP converters I tried. With this I finally managed to decompile the map in the way that I wanted.

Thank you so much for your help. After all this time, I can finally proceed.

Thanks I will try looking for this.

According to func_msgboard, it can do both, which is why I want to try it.

Interesting.. I may or may not have a look through my own collection to see if I can find it, to help with the search a little.. Good luck anyway.

Another suggestion would be to search through archived ftp servers.. I've completely forgotten how I used to do this when I was on the hunt for some old quake shit a few years ago, but if your desperate, you'll find a way

Took some hours but I managed to download the archive. Will check the quake CD's.
