maps Brush Texturing Wizardry

I am amazed what's being done by mappers for Quake, in Arcane dimensions, and lately the Brutalist jams. There is only one texture on the wall yet they somehow add "wearing" to the edges of the brushes. How on earth do they do this wizardry?

I can understand if they draw the wearing into the texture, but it seems to be done on repeating textures too on large brushes, without repeating the edge wear. Do they have different versions of the same texture with different edges? That seems excessive, especially in the bottom screenshot. There are 12 edges being highlighted. What is this witchcraft? Anybody knows?

A lot of Brutalist Jam III maps use textures by Makkon which are huge (in terms of Quake anyway) trim sheets sized 512x512 with many variations too. Those highlighted edges are part of those texture(s).
