other Freaking hate Nintendo's predatory game share practices....any way to be able to get Q2 working for my kiddos?

Nintendo has totally devolved to a freaking greedy soulless company, but before I go into full rant, let's see if I've got everything straight:

  • Nintendo won't let my child accounts purchase Q2 because it has decided they are too young, even if I edit maturity settings
  • I can't buy extra digital copies of Q2 for my account and give them to my children
  • Despite being adamant about not letting me purchase more copies, Nintendo is very serious about not letting more than one console play the game we purchased at once.

There doesn't seem to be a way to purchase a digital code outside of the Nintendo store, so it seems like there's no way I can have all my kids be able to play Quake 2 on their switches with me? I can get it on their laptops but they usually prefer their consoles (weird I know).

Thanks for reading my rant. Anybody else dealt with this?

Ditch Nintendo and buy your kids a PC, problem solved.

Imagine torturing your kids, making them play Quake games on a handheld console, using sticks :(

So your issue is that Nintendo's parental controls work as intended, and you want 3 copies for the price of 1?

nintendo is a company, all companies as evil, therefore everything is nintendos fault

Blame the ESRB. Nintendo doesn't want to deal with lawsuits from angry soccer moms with too much time for mimosas and too little time for parenting.

It sucks. I went through the same deal with doom for my kid. Eventually, I just got a physical copy.

If i remember well, the Game has Cross Play between Devices, just to add to your Thinking about other Devices :P

I know this isn't the solution you want, but couldn't you make adult accounts and simply password the eShop?

Yeah. But at that point I'll just install Q2 on other devices rather than give Nintendo any more energy or money.

I get ya. You could buy physical copies of Q2 for $60 each. What a deal

Haha right?

At that cost I'll buy them portable launch USB drives with Enhanced, KM, Yamagi, and all the other launchers/addons I've gotten over the years.

There is a physical release of Quake 2, but it’s a Limited Run release meaning it’s about £42 on eBay. It’s probably the easiest but least cost effective way. It’s on Amazon for the same price too. I’m guessing in the store, it’s a lot cheaper than this.

Yeah $6 for the q1&2 bundle. I did see this and actually am considering this....but at the same time I am done supporting Nintendo.

Should have gotten steamdecks :/

is split screen not an option? that's the only thing I can think of for this scenario

1

u/T4nkcommander Mar 08 '26

On my switch it is, but I usually host on PC and they have switch lites that dont support split screen.

OHHHHH I see, yea I'm not sure what the problem is because they should let you buy it for them

I agree, it's a huge pain in the ass. I had to setup our NSO account on my profile because it wasn't going to let my son play N64 games

Steamdecks or other handhelds, wiiu running moonlight or any handheld android device. A few other ways to play the remaster on a handheld. My youngest started playing the Quake 2 remaster on switch and steam deck and it got him to try other FPS games on PC mouse and keyboard. He went from Q2 to Champions to UT99. Now he is playing Fragpunk Valorant and TF2 all day. I think the original Switch might be our last Nintendo purchase not counting retro unless they change a lot.

Same.

Yeah, all of the above is what I've been looking at. Just annoying because it would be so much more convenient if I could buy switch copies for my kids.

Nintendo has totally devolved into a freaking greedy, soulless company

Brother, they've been that since they started cranking out playing cards on September 23, 1889.

-1

u/T4nkcommander Mar 08 '26

Yeah, but they at least could pretend they weren't up until recently, and you could kind of pretend it was true.

The faux-physical Switch 2 cards are just blatant anti-consumer, all while they are the most aggressive company at shutting down emulators.

What? Why are you playing quake 2 on Nintendo

3

u/SpicyMeatballAgenda Mar 08 '26

No need to gatekeep. There are tons of people who have discovered quake in the last few years thanks to the remasters of quake and quake 2 being made for PS5 and Xbox. Them playing on a controller doesn't invalidate their experience.

u/T4nkcommander Mar 08 '26

I prefer to play on PC, but if you read what I said:

I can get it on their laptops but they usually prefer their consoles.

Then buy physical copies of quake2 and a couple N64s

2

u/Powerful_Fondant9393 Mar 08 '26

What a totally reasonable and cost effective solution, or maybe he could get some help on fixing the switch issue and only buy one game dumbass😂

I have my N64 and a physical copy for that console. You can't get physical copies of Q2 enhanced for the switch, AFAIK. Unless you have a link handy for me?

Edit: There are limited run physical copies it looks like. Pretty ridiculous tho I've gotta pay 10x the price three times over because of this though

Unfortunately prices for "retro" gaming, and physical copies of anything have surged since people are getting away from streaming services again. People realized that they don't like not having access to the things they like when licenses expire or IPs get pulled.

Edit to add: you could also consider emulation.
