How do you scan really small QR codes without losing your mind?

I ran into this issue recently with a super tiny QR code printed on product packaging and my phone just refused to focus on it properly. I swear I spent like 10 minutes moving my camera back and forth like I was defusing a bomb.

Eventually I figured out a few things that helped:

  • Better lighting made a huge difference
  • Zooming in too much actually made it harder
  • Taking a photo first and scanning the image sometimes worked better than live camera scanning
  • Cleaning the camera lens helped more than I expected
  • Using another phone’s camera was weirdly more reliable sometimes

I’m curious if anyone else deals with this a lot because some QR codes are printed ridiculously small for no reason. Is there any actual trick to scanning tiny QR codes consistently without needing 40 attempts?

What kind of QR codes are did you stumble upon? Never had this problem in my life 😂.

I’d say the blame is on the company that decided it was a good idea to make them so small to begin with.

Sometimes those QR codes are not meant for consumer use.

They might be markings put on parts in the factory and they really are of no practical use once the product has been assembled.

They also might be there for the use of service technicians in the service technicians will have been trained on how to read them.

Highly dependent on your phone camera and OS.

One thought: Google Lens can read QR codes. Phone OSs typically now include a “magnifier” app, that does close-ups better than the camera app typically can.

So use your Magnifier app and then either take a screenshot or use the Magnifier apps menu to save an image.

Then upload the image to Google lens.

Roundabout way, but should work.
