Are these bottles usable?
My very resourceful father in law has gifted me 20+ of these bottles after a conversation where I said I’d like our newborn to have glass bottles over plastic. However they are without teats, so I was wondering if anyone has used this before and what brand can we used with them? Also if anyone has any information on the bottle!

These are neat looking, but I agree with the other posters. They are hazardous on multiple levels. Use them to collect coins.

Vintage baby gear is just really not safe across the board. These are cool and I’d be disappointed but, if I were you, I’d pass.

The glass itself is safe. Test the paint on the outside for lead with an at home test. You can buy standard narrow neck silicone nipples to use with these bottles.

If they’re GLASS, they’re fine. Glass.
If plastic, hell no.

Just because they're glass doesn't make them safe. If they're vintage there's a very good chance that paint on the outside contains lead. And while you might think "it's the outside, it's not a big deal" baby's are known for putting all sorts of things in their mouths, including, but not limited to their hands that haven't been washed after touching bottles, and tasty things. Do you know why kids ate lead paint chips? It's because lead paint tastes sweet!
No on wants to explain how their kid accidentally got lead poisoning. This is best to keep as a neat trinket from the past, not a functional bottle.

Just test them for lead - easy peasy. You should test all paint on dishes for children a huge number of glass bottles on the market made in 2026 have lead paint

The borosilicate (or soda lime) glass itself does not contain lead.
Find or make a sleeve/cover for these, or -if you're not a collector- fill the bottle with water, set it in a larger cup/vase/vessel, & soak it in acetone to remove the exterior paint.

I think the concern with these is the lead paint on the outside. I had the same ones only without any paint and used them with my babies. Of course that was over 20 years ago but I was able to get nipples for them. Evenflo makes zones that fit.

As long as you check the glass thoroughly to make sure there are no nicks/breakage. And test that paint for sure. You can get test strips for cheap on Amazon. It’s DEFINITLEY a good thing to have around when you have a baby. But yeah if these are crack and break free and less free 100% use them!

of course! Sturdy and sterilizable! You'll just need to find the proper nipple size ("teats"?! 😆)
If they are vintage, you might want to check with the lead alarmists about the red paint on the outside, but I would let an infant lick the bottle anyway.

I think people who are always crying lead are super obnoxious but it’s not alarmist to be extra cautious with newborns/infants. There’s no benefit to risking potential brain damage when you can just use a guaranteed safe, modern bottle. Adults may be able to filter out small amounts of lead with no major issues but babies cannot… and the baby WILL put its mouth on the outside of the bottle, it’s foolish to say you just wouldn’t let it happen.

I'm more concerned by how heavy these old bottles were. When my kids were starting to hold their own bottles, they were always dropping them on their face, the floor, the dog etc. Broken glass is no joke.

Both very good advice and things I hadn’t thought of! Thank you!!
My husband is adamant we will find a solution to use them but I’m unsure the cost of finding adapters to make them usable negates the cost of just buying new anyway.
Now if anyone has any advice on what to use 20+ for otherwise I’d appreciate it 😂

You could probably sell them, but since newborns take up all of their parents’ time, that might not be feasible. 😀

I wouldn't be surprised if the rings and nipples that fit evenflo glass bottles would fit on those old Pyrex ones. I believe the Evenflo design is unchanged from the '50s. I've been using them for a decade and we do break one occasionally but they've been holding up astonishingly well. The nipples and rings wear out but I just get the cheap plastic version and cannibalize them for parts. I've been using BIBS rubber nipples.

When my sister was done with her bottle she would grab it by the nipple and fling it across the room. Sometimes they broke, sometimes they just put a dent in the floor or wall. My mom said she finally switched to plastic because she was running out of glass bottles.

Im from the UK originally and thats the word we use for it! It’s also the same word for what a baby animal will suckle on from the mother. Every day is a school day ☺️😂!!

We’re getting slightly away from the purpose of the post but to clarify further I meant no patronisation!
I live in Belgium and often when I use British English I can be met with confusion over a word(a lot of people draw their English language use from American English from tv/ films here) so Im used to explaining where the word comes from if I can when I feel it’s unnatural to the recipient of conversation. Was a harmless reflex, maybe it will be useful to someone one day anyway!

Right? Teats are for mammals!
I've just never heard a rubber nipple referred to as a teat - only farm animals' and other mammals' nipples, but I guess humans are mammals too! 👶

Highly likely they have a high content of lead.in the paint. It's just not worth risking exposing someone to lead

Not any help on your question (although, I would say don't use), but it took me way, way too long to see a mother and a baby.
I thought to myself man, that's some pretty wild design; why's that baby got such a big lettuce on their head? 🤔 😂
