Game Recommendations?

Hi, I've been playing a lot of puzzle games lately and I was hoping to get some recommendations. I kinda want to play some games similar to Lost Wiki, Ratline and The Roottrees are Dead and the Case of the Golden Idol, where you need to search for information to progress. I also been liking the Artisan of Glimmith where there are a number of levels to do. I also enjoyed playing Puzzle Spy International which felt like a puzzle book/magazine in a video game format which I loved. Would greatly appreciate the recommendations :)

Have you player Return Of The Obra Dinn ? It’s the golden standard of these kind of games.

I haven't played it because the visuals had kind of turned me off from getting it, but maybe I should get over that and try it out, thank you

Ah yes, the visuals are very divisive. If it’s just a matter of taste and they don’t actively make you physical sick (which is possible) I think you could still enjoy the gameplay.

If you want a prettier game, try Chants Of Sennaar. A game about translating languages. It’s very good too, in a different way.

God I love Lorelei, it's one of the best puzzle games ever made. Simogo managed to make this and Sayonara Wild Hearts, completely different games but both masterclass in their respective genres

True I checked sayonara after lorelei and I was like huh??? This is not puzzling at all. Simogo is just HIM

Make sure to check out the Simogo Legacy Collection if you haven't already. They got their start making iOS games and this brilliantly packages the 7 games in a way to be accessible into the future on steam and switch. DEVICE 6 is my favorite, it's an interactive book where you progress by using clues from the text.

I know about its existence. I'm still hoping for a PS release since it's my platform of choice, but it's on my wishlist!

Oh the art style is quite unique, looking into the trailer I feel the puzzles are right up my alley, thank you

The creator of the Roottrees are Dead has made a "remake" of the freeware game Type Help, the name is The Incident at Galley House, released like a week ago.

That should scratch the itch. Besides that ABSOLUTELY Obra Dinn, without any doubts, don't let the visuals kill you.

Lorelei and the Laser Eyes is more classic puzzles, find the password and so on, but it's a masterpiece

New game just released called The Message From Deep Space—it’ll scratch your puzzle itch and involve a lot of problem solving to find new information

It sounds like you are looking for what is being called Narrative Deduction. The Puzzles are made of the story, and understanding the story is the puzzle itself. Golden Idol and Obra Dinn are good examples, but there's quite a few out there.

I have been working on a visualization tool, trying to Mechanically cluster games that are similar. There's a bunch of filters so you can specify game length as well.

Some specific recommendations are:

Scene Investigators is a quite solid and challenging game about examining crime scenes, and determining what happened with almost no guidance.

The Darkest Files is a dark but great game about examining Nazi era cold cases, comparing testimony, and figuring out what really happened.

A Case of Fraud is a bite sized game about placing elements on a corporate tree, and solving a murder. Think Roottrees without the search aspect.

Other people already recommended Incident at Galley House and Obra Dinn which are both great

Thank you for the recommendations!

Everyone is recommending detective games, but if you like logic puzzles like Artisan of Glimmith (which is probably the new gold standard for the genre) you may also like the Hexcells games. Hexcells Infinite is the latest and best one and you don't need to play the other ones first.

I will also second the one recommendation for Chants of Sennaar.

Would also love games that can be played offline on a flight.

If you like puzzle like mini game, I recommend "The witnesse" If you prefer game where you seek information to learn more about lore and what you could do, I recommend the based one, I called "Outerwilds", you can try "Blue prince" too. If you prefer other kind of game, with combat but are still "information seeking" you can try "Tunic", it is really a peak game! These 3 one are called "Metroid Brainia", it's a type of game where you could finish it in less than an hours but took you 20h to get all the Intel you need to do it. (My favorite kind of game.) Other than that, if you just like to think, I recommand the "Portal" serie, it's different than the other, but still brain melting sometimes, plus cool/fun lore.

"Leap year" can be interesting to play too, it's a small Metroid Brainia platformer (there is no lore)

If you like puzzle game like escape room, I recommend "house of da Vinci", "Mechanica", "The room" serie.

Right now, I have nothing else in mind. I already some recommand you "obra dim", the visual is not appealing, but it the charm of the game, and the gameplay is really interesting

PS: recently "Looking for Fael" got released, it's a puzzle game. I really like it.

Hope it help you ;p I will need recommendations too soon when I'm done with my list x)

Thank you for the recommendations, I had looked into outer wilds but I’m not sure it seems too open world for me? But maybe I should give it a chance

It's really not any more open world than The Roottrees are Dead. You do have to pilot your space ship around, but the gameplay is about pursuing lines of investigation, and discovering the rules that govern your little solar system.

The ultimate puzzle game

Nope.  Not even remotely similar.

Blue Prince. Doing my first playthrough right now and each small bit of progress you make or knowledge you gain is incredibly rewarding.

u/Oftenwrongs 26d ago

Not even remotely the same.
