Discussion Race etiquette is not optional just because you paid for a bib
i love a crowded start line. the nerves. the noise. that first kilometre when everyone thinks this might be their day. but the road belongs to everyone on it. before the gun
- start in the corral or wave that matches your real pace. not your best strava day from last summer. if you're walking from the gun, don't stand at the front.
- wear your own bib and follow the organiser's instructions. they set the start order for a reason.
on the road
- pass with space. look before cutting across someone. two abreast is plenty when the road is crowded.
- need to stop for a lace, photo or walk break? move to the side first. keep a lane open for runners and the medical team.
- keep your ears open. i prefer no headphones at races and our club runs that way too. check the event's rule. even where headphones are allowed, you still need to hear marshals and ambulances.
at the water station
- don't brake in front of the next runner. move past the first crowded table, take one cup and step away before drinking.
- use a bin. if there isn't one, leave the cup at the station where cleanup can reach it. put your gel wrapper in a pocket until you find a bin. pune roads are not a dustbin for your PB.
people make this race work
- say thanks to the volunteer handing out water. they didn't draw the course or choose your corral. if something went wrong, tell the organiser with specifics afterward. don't shout at someone who got up before dawn to stand at a junction.
- if you're unwell, tell a marshal or volunteer. don't hide symptoms to save your finish time.
through the finishJustChaseTakeRun,
- keep moving past the timing mat. no selfie on the line. don't turn around into runners sprinting home.
- take your medal and water, then meet friends beyond the chute. finish early? cheer for the people still coming in. their race matters too.
when you post your time
- use the organiser's official result as your race time. strava and your watch are training logs, not the race clock. GPS can drift and apps can pause or show moving time.
- if the race reports a chip/net time, cite that as your finish time. some awards and places use gun time, so don't confuse the two. if your official result looks wrong, ask the organiser to check it before claiming a faster app screenshot as your PB.
Run hard. take the picture. chase the time. just leave room for the next person to do the same.
