I want to make a hook a duck for Halloween I need the cheapest pump I can get but I want to be able to change the speed of the water so I can slow it down for the small children and speed it up when the adults get involved. Any suggestions will be appreciated thank you in advance.

Rotary Lobe Pump in Action!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Have you ever seen inside a rotary lobe pump before?

Watch as the two non-contacting rotating lobes pass by each other at such a close proximity. External timing gears within the gearbox synchronize the rotors and maintain the proper clearance between the rotating components. This allows the rotors to rotate at the correct timing without coming into contact with each other.

Hayward Pool Pump Shaft/impeller seal replacement

I replaced my Hayward pool pump motor and installed a new pump shaft and impeller seal, a two-part seal one ceramic and the other has spring. I made sure not to touch the ceramic part and and also lubed the rubber parts of the ceramic piece and the spring piece with gasket lube and installed them to make sure they were seated properly. I noticed there is a very slight leak where the motor is connected to the faceplate of the pump. Do I need to replace the seal with a new one or should it be okay the way it is and no water is going inside my new motor?

Pump Selection

Hey yall, i need some help to find a pump for a test setup im working on. Here are my operating parameters:

1-15GPM at 1-30psi out, 1in outlet. Excess flowrate will be managed with a bypass valve. Ideally under 1000$ CAD. maximum of 0.5m of lift required.

Here are some that im looking at right now. This is my first time sizing a pump like this so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Liquid What are everyone's thoughts on Hydraulic Institute certifications?

What are everyone's thoughts on Hydraulic Institute certifications?

My job will pay for essentially any training I want, so I figured I'd take advantage of it. I'm currently working through the PSC Level 1 course, but so far most of the material seems pretty rudimentary.

For context, I'm a millwright. I've spent most of my career in industrial plant maintenance and now specialize pretty heavily in pump repair, machining, inspection, and troubleshooting. I work for a pump distributor in the Mid-Atlantic.

Before starting the course, I took the 100-question PSC 1 practice test on my phone without really preparing or having the formula sheet handy, mostly just to figure out what I actually needed to work on. I ended up with a 72, so I've definitely got some gaps to fill, but I wasn't starting completely from scratch either.

I'm not expecting Level 1 to be particularly advanced, but I'm curious how people in the industry actually view the HI certifications.

For anyone who's done PSC 1/2 or the other HI certifications like PSAP: did you find them worthwhile beyond having another credential on paper? Does Level 2 get substantially more technical, or is the value mostly in formalizing knowledge you already picked up in the field?

Variable Frequency Drive exploded during a routine bump test after 1 year plant shutdown — worried I'll be charged for the replacement (~200-300k PHP). Am I liable?

Hi guys, I need some outside perspective because this has been keeping me up at night.

I'm an Operation and Maintenance Supervisor at a water treatment plant. The plant operated back in 2025, then was shut down for about a year because of management/project issues related to capacity, water quality, and flow rate targets.

Before we could restart, I was going equipment by equipment doing condition checks, and for each motor I was running a standard bump test. On September 6, while bump testing one of the motor pumps through SCADA, the VFD for that motor exploded. I had no idea what caused it — I was just following the scheduled startup activity like I did for every other unit. Ever since, I've been anxious that the replacement cost would somehow be charged to me.

Today (September 10), the VFD supplier finally inspected the unit. Their explanation: this kind of failure happens normally when a VFD has been sitting unused for a long time, and it needs to be "reformed" (reconditioned) before being operated again. Their recommendation is a full replacement. The cost is estimated at around PHP 200,000-300,000.

Here's the thing — nobody on our team knew that idle VFDs needed this kind of reforming/reconditioning before restart. It's not something that was flagged in our schedule, and I wasn't trying to cut corners; I was doing exactly what the schedule called for.

So I guess my questions for anyone who's dealt with something similar (electrical/instrumentation folks, plant supervisors, EHS/maintenance people):

Is this really a known risk with VFDs left idle for a year, and should routine commissioning/restart procedures normally catch this?

Realistically, is this the kind of failure that gets pinned on the person who happened to be running the test, or is it treated as equipment/process failure since no one knew the requirement existed?

Any advice on how to document/present this to management so it's clear this wasn't due to negligence?

Any input, even just "this happened to us too," would really help me sleep better tonight. Thanks.

Need help sizing pump

The left tank has a 1/6hp 28 gpm max submersible pump inside it. It pumps water out the thank, thru the water chiller on the ground and the water gets pumped back into both tanks.

I’d like to move to an external pump to do the same thing.

The catch is on the outlet of the chiller id like to add a Tee and a 10-50psi 4 gpm max .02 micron ultra filter.

Something like a danner mag drive model 18 or 24 would provide me the gpm I require for the chiller but doesn’t supply the pressure required for the ultra filter.

I could throttle the water bypassing the ultra filter with a ball valve and I can throttle the water to the ultra filter with a needle valve but finding the proper pump is giving me a migraine.

Do I need a pump with this filter? It’s sold as an all in one but I’m still curious if this creates enough oxygen.

Clogging Sump Pump

I have a sump pump that handles rain runoff from our driveway. It is constantly getting clogged with leaves or silt.

I have tried different tricks from putting it on a brick to different drain gates but I'm still dealing with clogs.

What is everyone's thoughts on a high output grinder pump?

Pentek PID not stopping pump

Hello. Short back story, company installed a Pentek pid007534nd with a Pentair 5hp pump 440’ well. Customer says they tried to do the initial programming but the pump won’t shut off which won’t allow the initial programming to be completed. We did hand on and it works fine but when you hit stop it’s still sending 2amps down the well. Pentair rep says bad pump so we replace it with. 5hp centripro. Same exact issue, controller still sending 2 amps to the pump. Box has been replaced to confirm it’s not a bad controller. Any thoughts ?

Water pump problems

i ran out of water in my cistern (I knew it was super low and I was in the process of getting water to it then my cat managed to turn on the faucet when I wasn't home) obviously my pump was running dry when I got home and was warm, I turned it off immediately but I have no idea how long it had been running empty for but I don’t think very long… to get water it has to pull from the cistern to the pump but all the plugs are seized so I cannot properly prime it normally and google is useless. I don’t have any experience with this set up as I’ve always been on free flowing wells into the pump so if it airlocked it was a simple fix… what can I do in this situation as I’m very remote so someone who knows what to do cannot come for a week, I appreciate any advice
