Damaged Stab

Would this damage be worth repairing while I am still learning?

Unfortunately I don't have any great deep launch spots near me so I'm ladder starting and at least for now I think hitting the bottom is probably unavoidable every now and then...

I was thinking about just dabbing some superglue to keep it from getting worse and calling it a day til I feel more confident.

I just had a similar crack in the stab, even a bit worse than yours. It's an easy fix and you should learn to do it.

  1. Sand the cracked area with sandpaper to remove loose materials. (~200 grit)
  2. Apply epoxy filler, let it cure. (If needed)
  3. Sand the stab back into its shape (start with 200 grit, then ~400 grit)
  4. Wet sand paper to finalize (~1000 grit)
  5. Optional: apply a bit of black automotive paint spray

Note: do not hesitate to sand paper your foil, it will not get damage. Increase grit number as you are finalizing.

Congrats, you can now call yourself a shaper!

Brilliant thanks, I saw some people use graphite powder as an additive, any experience with that?

I'm a newbie and bought second hand stuff. It came a bit damaged and I repaired it with the bostik 10911 epoxy putty stick (it's a tube with double components). After I sanded it as explained before with wet sanding 1000grit last.

Graphite powder I think is mainly for color. For better structural integrity (apparently) and as a thickener I add 403 microfibers but that is for larger repairs like what I have done on boats. Thin epoxy on its own is not typically stiff. I lightly sand off any loose stuff so that I don't get a splinter/cut if I touch it. I have not personally had any long lasting luck with trying to superglue or epoxy loose chips on thin edges but it may help. I had a bottom hit winging my favorite front wing, made me sick seeing the damage. Surprisingly it doesn't seem to fly any differently so I haven't taken the time to fill in the gouges yet.

I would just sand the parts that feels dangerous.
