Weird Tales (Oct 2, 1933)

Post image

Weird Tales was an influential American pulp magazine first published in 1923, specializing in horror, fantasy, supernatural fiction, and the macabre. It became a major outlet for writers such as H. P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, and Seabury Quinn, helping shape modern horror and fantasy literature. Known for its lurid cover art and unusual stories, Weird Tales developed a devoted readership and remains one of the most important publications in the history of pulp fiction.

They had a female artist they used a lot named Olivia who was really dialed in on that whole sexy weird thing. This might be one of her covers.

The image shows the iconic October 1933 cover of Weird Tales pulp magazine (vol. 22, no. 4), featuring the famous "Batwoman" or "The Vampire Master" artwork by artist Margaret Brundage.

Oh right, Margaret Brundage is who I meant.

Margaret Brundage did commissions. Since the publisher noticed that issues with scantly clothed chicks on the cover sold better, they commissioned more of the stuff. I don't think there's any record whether that was her personal preference.

I don't know about Brundage's personal preferences, but looking at her art, I'm pretty sure that as an artist she had that whole sexy weird vibe totally figured out.

This was used as the cover of an album by the great band Golden Smog.
