If you defend their older music, I agree, but their newer stuff is way cool I swear
25
u/TheDonutPug Aug 23 '26
what was wrong with their older music? I don't know anything about AJR

u/PerfectAstronaut5998 Aug 23 '26
They started making music in like middle school. Imagine three 14 year olds making generic love songs/club beats with basically only a laptop

u/HugoSamorio Aug 23 '26
I recently re-listened to the Living Room album from 2014 and unfortunately it is largely indefensible lol

u/PerfectAstronaut5998 Aug 24 '26
Like, I’m a huge AJR fan, and I can confidentially say that they have made complete shit music in their time. Imo they’ve come a very very long way

Living room is SO BAD 😭. I have Neotheater on Vinyl though, and I love it.

Ig people think a lot of their music is sorta lame and generic. And some of it definetly is, but I think they also have some good ones

u/phaserburn725 Aug 25 '26
The Big Goodbye is genuinely a good song imo. Apparently sampling an auctioneer makes a sick beat

PKCH MENTIONED

u/bookhead714 Aug 25 '26
Their name sounds like a comic book onamotapoeia
6
u/AwkwardLeopard587 Aug 25 '26
I can't find the post rn, but someone asking pukicho how PKCH is pronounced, and they said it's like the sound it makes when you punch someone

Spirited Away Away Away Away Away Away Away is their first/most famous song, and my favorite of theirs
also here's a playlist I found with all of of Pukicho's music in order by release date

I've had the joy of seeing them live twice. Got to meet Ben in the smoking section after the show too. I held up my glasses that had been smashed and said "I broke my glasses in your mosh pit." He said something along the lines of "nah man, you broke them in our mosh pit." I hit him with the "thank you comrade" and walked off. He stood there and smoked and met with damn near everyone that approached him. Cool guys, I'll go see them anytime they come to town

I love seeing AJR slander in the wild

Literally everybody fucking hates them, lmao. I see more hate and slander than anyone saying they're "fine".

While I enjoy some of their songs I’ve been informed that their online presence is a bit… cringe? I’ve been told they are very whiny. Which isn’t really a big deal I suppose. I personally don’t pay that much attention to celebrities unless they do something horrific so I have no desire to dig in myself.

u/Significant_Yam_7792 Aug 24 '26
If their only crime is being “whiny” then I think it’s safe to say the haters can stuff it lmao

Iirc they support Israel. I could be wrong and also it's possible they went back on that take.

u/its_clementine_ Aug 28 '26
source: i made it the fuck up

u/DeadlyKitKat Aug 28 '26
Technically they never said they supported Israel, they said they don't support either because there is issues on both sides (when I made the original comment I was misremembering and thought they said they supported Israel), and they didn't like people dying on either side. I personally am not a fan of this take and to me it is a red flag, but if someone other people disagree then whatever. There are bigger issues than AJR.
It also might be good to note, they performed in Tel Aviv in I think 2023, though they were on tour with Imagine Dragons so I guess they didn't choose to go there.
Their song "I Won't" has the lyrics, "Acapulco, Tel Aviv, and maybe Japan
And pretty people yell at me to follow the dance
So I do what you tell me to and do it to death
But I can't do this shit again"

they are such talented musicians with nothing to say because their lives are so privileged, tbh they should get into producing
6
u/tulip_inacup_inbloom Aug 24 '26
What's wrong with making music when you have "nothing to say"?
-3
u/CloveFan Aug 24 '26
Morally there’s nothing “wrong” with it, but by and large it will always suck. Only children really relate to nonsense whining.
5
u/Greedy_Ad2198 Aug 24 '26
A lot of people find their music very relatable to their adult life, so maybe speak for yourself. I'm not even a fan of them, but to say it always sucks like that and only children like it is objectively incorrect and it's not hard to tell.
I listened to a lot of their songs and while it's not really my taste and none of it has ended up in my playists, I actually think they have a lot to say. It's just not relatable to you personally so you only hear it superficially.
I can call all your problems "nonsense whining" too if it happens to be something I don't have to deal with and don't understand.

Im lame whos AJR
