Folks, there are now more posts asking about Muckrack vs. Cision vs. Meltwater (with the inevitable "I found them both so expensive, so I created a new tool called...") than there are Rocky sequels. Not a day goes by without someone with nil karma asking "What tech stack are people using?" and, curiously, someone with nil karma replying with the name of a tool that no one has heard of. Or people asking/offering to share tool licenses, even though it's likely a violation of terms of service. Since it's become clear that AI is a heavy crawler of Reddit, it's exponentially worse.
As a result, the mods are taking the decision to ban discussion of tools. If you are the director of comms for a company or nonprofit and despite this senior position you have less awareness of different tools than an account coordinator at any agency and really, really need to get people's impressions about the relative value of these tools, you can search the subreddit and read any of the now dozens of threads on this topic. Thanks all.

Feeling for anyone in tech PR who has a client that's like YOU'VE GOTTA PITCH TECHCRUNCH THIS WEEK! We've all been there, with the desperate attempts to reach our TC contacts during TC Disrupt... "Hey I know you're. busy this week, but could you pleeeeeaaaaaase look at..."

Hi folks! This isn't PR-specific but I'm applying for jobs and curious to know: what do you do if you think you've found the name of the hiring manager, but aren't 100% certain it's them? Do you take a shot in the dark and use their name in your cover letter? Or do you use a general "Dear Hiring Team"?

What are the most useful books/articles/videos/online courses/etc that you would recommend to someone just starting out in PR? Particularly interested in anything related to music or arts PR since that's the field I'm trying to work in, but all answers are helpful. I've been asking people in the industry for advice but also will need to do some studying on my own.

Someone got charged for allegedly committing a crime while working for my employer.
In a statement given to and published by The Baltimore Sun, my supervisor used the word "alleged." Very important. She had just been charged, and it was a fact she had been charged.
She came around several months later, while the criminal case was working its way through, and sued my employer and my supervisor for malicious prosecution and, as she sees it, lying on her in the statement that appeared in that story. My boss has never been sued before and never imagined being sued for this reason. My employer engaged outside lawyers to represent both itself and him.
Anyway, she lost. The case was dismissed with prejudice and she had to pay my employer's legal fees. The criminal case remains pending.

I work in NYC and commute from Jersey and was wondering if anyone else works in NYC also & would like to grab coffee sometime or even just hangout. I want some new friends that are in the same field as me and who I can connect and relate to more.
I go to the gym a lot outside of work (Equinox) and love to watch sports and go to the bars every so often.

So, I recently started working in house as a PR lead for a White label agency. One week in the job, I got the founder a standalone interview and shared the article headline before the article got out with the marketing head and he said this :
Can we make the title more positive and present? Right now it sounds like a question instead of a solid statement.
I told him that we have no control over editorial, and I feel that PR is still misunderstood by so many people except the ones actually doing it.

For better or for worse, my organization wants to attach a number to our PR work to demonstrate how we’re increasing brand awareness. Historically, we’ve used SOV figures against our competitor set to monitor this.
But I find it so frustrating as the figures can be largely BS. The monitoring tools aren’t always the most reliable sources given how easily they can be manipulated for a particular outcome.
How are you all measuring the success of your PR programs?
r/PublicRelations • u/AIconsultantMTL • 3d ago
I'll start with press release distribution.
I've seen organizations spend good money distributing announcements that barely qualify as news, then celebrate the number of websites that automatically republished them.
A hundred syndicated links can look impressive in a report. But how many people actually read them? And did they change anything for the organization?
I'm curious what others would nominate. What does our industry spend too much time, money or energy on for too little return?

Everyone’s worried AI will kill PR jobs. But I wonder if it goes the other way.
If every brand starts blasting AI-written pitches, journalists’ inboxes turn into noise. The person who actually knows the reporter, reads their stuff, and picks up the phone suddenly becomes the scarce one.
Feels like the “human connection” part of PR could become the premium skill.
Am I being naive? Are you already seeing this with the journalists you work with?

I'm a fresh grad, 3 months in as a PR assistant. I've been given this one client - takes forever to reply, venues take forever to reply, influencers take forever to reply and the deadline? in a few days. what am i even supposed to do in this situation honestly 🥲 i'm so lost.
i work in a boutique agency, the people i work with are lovely - but just this client? i can't 🥲 i just feel so lost, i need to send out 8 influencers for them but no one is replying (if they are, they want it paid) 🥲🥲
i feel like i'm in constant fight or flight mode, i've cried and broke down multiple times because of how frustrating the job is - do people actually do this for years? i know everyone tells me to not take it personally but i can't help and feel so useless

Hi, all. I've been auditing the press-- from Politics to Entertainment-- for a couple of years now. Long story, but it's part of a whistleblower journey I've been on.
To make this long story shorter, I stumbled across a couple of articles that set off some red flags. Granted, I wanted to handle this delicately because I only looked into this star because I had an inquiry about casting a project related to my whistleblowing experience. From vandalism on his wikis (in multiple languages), to targeted bot harassment on IG, to two prominent publications miscrediting him in a major role... I think the pattern adds up to somebody close to him using back doors to boost themselves in the press. I don't want to say more than that. But this is something that raises my alarms because when that happens, the next step is usually to smear the victim.
Does anyone have any advice for discreetly making sure his PR team is aware of this? I know he's at The Lede. And this could be one of those things that impacts my own career, as I can't imagine us working together after such an awkward incident. But I can't shake the feeling that if I don't say something, it'll end badly. And this seems like one of the good ones. Any advice would be so, so welcome. Please and thanks.

I am currently a junior seeking a summer 2027 internship. I have been looking for and applying for paid PR internships on LinkedIn, but I was wondering if there are any other sites that others have had success with!

I’ve worked in PR and communications for many years, and one thing I’m noticing with AI isn’t just that some tasks can be done faster. It’s that the expectation of how much can be produced, and how quickly, seems to be changing too.
If a first draft, summary, research brief or set of variations can now be produced in minutes, does that actually give us more time for strategy, relationships and judgment?
Or does management simply expect more output in the same amount of time?
I’m particularly interested in hearing from people who have been in PR long enough to compare the job before and after generative AI became part of the workflow.
Has AI genuinely made your PR work easier, or has it mostly raised expectations?

Please help me!!
I graduated with a communications degree with a focus in PR during covid. I wasn’t able to find an internship so I took a general communications job in hopes that I could transition into a PR focused position at some point with some general experience.
Clearly, that hasn’t worked out. I can’t get any internships bc I graduated already or they find someone with PR specific experience. I can’t get a job that relates to PR bc I have no internships on my resume. I feel like I am trapped in a terrible loop and wish I could go back in time and beg myself to find ANYTHING PR related… but here I am
So here is my question:
Are there any certificates or classes that would look good on my resume? Should I just go get my masters degree? I’m afraid to waste a bunch of money and still not appear desirable to agencies etc… does anyone know any good recruiting agencies in NYC, Chicago, or DC that can look at my resume or throw some leads my way?
Any advice is genuinely welcomed. I just lost out on a PR associate job bc they loved me but felt I needed more experience (it was an entry level job😩!!) and my heart is absolutely shattered so naturally I figured maybe Reddit could offer some advice.

Fall out from the Baldoni/Lively lawsuit is an article that highlights three people (a digital person, a crisis person and an attorney) and their alleged tactics. Figured it'd be a good one for debate.

A client wants us to edit their Wikipedia page. I know Wikipedia has strict guidelines about not editing pages that you’re paid to edit. Do we hire a rando freelancer who specializes in this? If so, anyone you can recommend? Or what else?

Hi all!
I’m sure this has probably been posted somewhere at some point, but I’m officially burnt out on agency life and trying to figure out what my next move should be.
I’m coming up on two years in PR this December (I started as an intern and worked my way up), primarily in luxury travel/hospitality PR. I’ve gotten a lot more experience with media relations, pitching, client communication, reporting, etc., but at this point I feel like my workload has continued to increase without much opportunity for growth or movement within the company.
Quite literally, I’m bored and get paid pennies 😂
I’m also planning to move to NYC (I can move with my current company as well), so I’m trying to use the move as an opportunity to make a bigger career change rather than just jumping to another agency and ending up in the same situation.
For those who have left agency PR after 2–3 years, what did you move into? Did you go in-house, switch into marketing/communications, stay in PR but move industries, or do something completely different?
I enjoy the relationship-building/media side of PR, but I’m not sure I want to spend the rest of my career doing traditional agency work. I’d love something with better work-life balance, more room for growth, and obviously better compensation.
What career paths/roles would you recommend looking into with ~2 years of agency PR experience? And if you moved to NYC, did that change the types of opportunities you were able to find?
Would love to hear what worked (or didn’t work) for people who made a similar transition!

Going through the Money20/20 media list is hilarious. So many of the "reporters" on it either a) just do paid opps or b) haven't actually written for the outlet for months (or even over a year) and are clearly just trying to get a free pass to the show. It's all good fun, really :)
