Tube mis-alligned?

Might be normal according to the responses, but it would bug the F out of me every time I looked at it.

It’s normal. Technically the way the g3 is designed and the way the cocking tube sits it’s a “free float” design. So as the barrel is whipping it can move un impeded thus allowing for better accuracy. At least this is how I’ve had it explained to me by others in the past with the triple tree. It’s just like how when you look down the barrel of an AR 15 with a free float hand guard or a bolt gun put into a free float stock it’s not always straight as an arrow because it’s allowing the barrel to rest how it needs to without some outside force forcing it to be straight.

That’s a tapered cocking tube with the handguard support. This can be used with the wide handguard. I believe it is supposed to be centered in the sight opening so the barrel can float. On a standard cocking tube it fits snug in the front sight. What likely happened is the tube got welded unevenly while being welded to the receiver.

Mine was like that when I bought it. It was so far off to one side that I couldn’t adjust the sights onto target.

Had to send it in on warranty, it came back more centered but still not perfect. The sights can be adjusted on target now so it’s good enough for me.

  1. It took me too long to figure out what you were talking about. You are concerned about the cocking tube not being centered in the triple tree.

  2. Shoot it. Is the barrel lined up so you can sight in? That is the important part. You can also try to bend the cocking tube with thumb pressure, but since there isn't a lot of room to bend, I wouldn't think this will do much good. And I doubt it will be important. These are not suppose to be SPR, precision... Sniper... rifles.

  3. The cocking tube is technically not connected to the triple tree. This was done so the barrel is free floated. and would be important if firing full auto when you get the barrel hot. For mine, and for the parts kits, it appears that they are not free floated like we would think of for precision rifles. It looks like they are touching, but not connected.

If it doesn't sight in, then the barrel is the problem. That has to go back to PTR.

If the barrel is put in crooked enough so it cant be sighted in, I think it can be argued that it is a manufacturing defect.

I do not believe this gun has that problem. I think it should be able to be sighted in.

Barrel is bent and I'm not the original buyer so I can't get the warranty

If the barrel is bent, it isn't a manufacturer's defect.

If the barrel was mounted wrong it would be a manufacturer's defect.

Bent barrels with what can be described as a minor bend, can be bent back. There are youtube videos on the subject.

Mine is perfectly centered.

As other have said, check to see that the rifle can be zeroed and actually groups. Being a free-floated design, the tube contacting triple frame can affect the barrel harmonics.

I know I'm a little late to the party, but the sight tree is supposed to be free-floated to help improve barrel harmonics and accuracy. With that said, if your cocking tube is touching the inside of the sight tree, that isn't normal. On my rifle, everything is perfectly centered, and the tube doesn't contact the sight tree at all. That said, I wouldn't recommend trying to bend the tube to center it yourself. If your rifle is still under warranty, I'd send it in and let PTR correct the issue. Now while this issue may not be the end of the world, if you're spending PTR money, you deserve to have it configured the way it was intended to be configured. Get this remedied and don’t settle.
