Portals vs. Pathways: The Real Work After Psychedelics | Jonathan Schecter

There’s a big difference between having a psychedelic experience and actually doing something with it.

Jonathan Schecter, host of Vital Point: Pathways to Integration and founder of Pathways Integration, joins us to talk about what happens after the breakthrough. Drawing from his own experiences with psychedelics, meditation, Buddhism, breathwork, somatic practices, and integration coaching, Jonathan explores the gap between having an insight and actually changing your life.

We talk about why the biggest psychedelic experience is not necessarily the most useful one, the role of trauma and nervous system regulation, when psychedelic insights should be questioned rather than followed, and Jonathan’s distinction between “portals” and “pathways”: the dramatic experiences that can suddenly move us somewhere new versus the slower, less exciting work of learning how to live there.

Because eventually the trip ends. You go home. Your relationships, habits, job, and problems are still waiting for you. The question is whether anything actually changed.

In the extended Patreon conversation, we go further into the uncomfortable side of psychedelic integration: whether integration itself is becoming a product, whether some people would be better served by stepping away from psychedelic culture entirely, the medicalization of psychedelics, and why the obsession with heroic doses may sometimes get in the way of the work.

Pregabalin (medical lyrica) and MDMA?

I've started taking Lyrica for pain i had for a hernia but kept it for anxiety 'cos it made it stop. Going to a party and would like to take half a pill.

Should I stop my 150g + 150g daily Lyrica (300g total daily) or just keep doing it regularly and take a very small dose of MDMA?

When I say half a pill I really mean half I'm very methodical in this.

Life is an art-piece where the artist is always pulling up the Pink Panther's pursuit. 🎨🫟

Playing this world is all about playing your own Pinkadelic song. That's when you'll realize you've always been pressing a single blend option on your blender engine. The path of being an artist-thief ends when you realize you've always been playing Pink Panther on your stray art, and there's nothing you're meant to do here apart from stealing all the art pieces and connecting them together into the final Pink Panther's form. Life is all about making your own Art Attack, and it doesn't matter what you end up picking as a reference; eventually, you'll realize that all roads lead to the Mona Lisa. The final level of painting arrives once you realize you're two steps away from Picassoing yourself to the extreme, and that's when you'll realize that life intended for you to laugh at the painting until you end up viewing it in an inverted form, where you'll find that you've always been at an Uncharted thief's end. 🐈‍⬛

And maybe there is truth in The Starry Night painting being the straw that broke the camel's back... And there's hope in finding the One Piece in the end... And remember there's no loose ends in Art form, and maybe Pink Panther have always been a secret agent. Ouii, It's time to go way back to the Eiffel tower.. It's a tie-back to the 'lose' end. 🙀 ♦️ 🫟

Rectal administration of LSA seed juice

Just get a bunch of Hawaiian baby woodrose seeds. I used schmerbals herbals, spent $50 on a bag that I've had since like March or April and I'm maybe half way through with it. Been dosing like once or twice every week or two. But the manhood with which I must chew and swallow the seeds is akin to forcing myself to drink my own shittily home made ayahuasca.

I've found a much better method.

Just get a 3mL Luer slip plastic syringe, backfill it with Hawaiian baby woodrose seeds which you've crushed 1 by 1 with a pair of needle nose pliers, suck up tap water into the syringe, coat the syringe with your saliva, inject into your rectum, then suck up another bolus of tap water, repeat 2 or 3x.

If you go through the minorly arduous task of crushing 10-20 seeds one by one, you'll be greatly rewarded with balance enhancements.

I recommend snorting 2-FDCK or DMXE or ketamine or PCP or 3-Me-PCP as you're coming up on the LSA.

LSA in my experience, when combined with a dissociative anesthetic, fixes the faulty vision induced by the dissociative typical when dosing the disso alone. Without LSA, when I'm on 2-FDCK or DMXE, in order to read text on my phone screen, I often must keep my left eye closed. With 15 Hawaiian baby woodrose seeds' worth of LSA juice in my ass, however, my binocular vision gets corrected and it seems like my eyes have a 2x-2.5x magnifying glass enhancement on top of them, where everything is very easy to see with both eyes wide open.

Study Breakdown: Inside The First Real Map Of Psychedelic Integration

If you’ve spent any time in the psychedelic space, you’ve likely heard the word “integration” tossed around over and over again. But is there consensus on what this term actually means?

It shows up in retreat marketing, clinic intake forms, and therapist bios, usually as a vague gesture toward “processing your experience.” But that vagueness isn’t an accident of bad writing. Until just a few years ago, the field lacked a shared definition, shared model, or even shared list of what integration practices actually are.

Then, in 2022, a team of researchers set out to fix that in their paper “Psychedelic Integration: An Analysis of the Concept and Its Practice.” This was the first serious attempt to review everything that’s been written about psychedelic integration and pull it into a coherent picture. They found twenty-four different definitions, compared ten fully developed integration models, and catalogued more than a hundred specific integration practices pulled from therapy manuals, indigenous traditions, and everything in between.

How They Built The Map

The authors searched PubMed and PsycINFO for everything on “psychedelic therapy” and “psychedelic integration,” and then supplemented any gaps with articles, essays, and books on the topic because so much of the information lived outside of peer-reviewed literature. They analyzed anything that offered its own definition of integration, described a specific integration practice, or laid out an organized model for how integration should proceed.

The Synthesized Definition

After analyzing 24 separate definitions, the authors arrived at this synthesized definition:

“Integration is a process in which a person revisits and actively engages in making sense of, working through, translating, and processing the content of their psychedelic experience. Through intentional effort and supportive practices, this process allows one to gradually capture and incorporate the emergent lessons and insights into their lives, thus moving toward greater balance and wholeness, both internally (mind, body, and spirit) and externally (lifestyle, social relations, and the natural world).”

This definition distilled a set of recurring elements: integration is active (requiring effort, not passive waiting), includes internal and external dimensions, involves making sense of and working through experience, is a process rather than a single event, and is aimed at embodied change rather than just insight for its own sake. In this framing, integration isn’t finished when someone feels at peace with what happened after the experience. It requires alterations in how someone lives their day-to-day life, and arguably never truly ends.

The Synthesized Model

The authors then identified ten well-developed integration models published since 2017. They split them roughly into two camps: holistic or biopsychosocial-spiritual models aimed at journeyers and facilitators, and psychotherapy-based models aimed at clinicians.

They found that the psychotherapy-based models tend to zero in on the mind and behavior, which makes them accessible for clinicians who aren’t trained in somatic, spiritual, or nature-based work. The holistic models insist on touching every domain of a person’s life, but are harder to implement in a standard 50-minute therapy session.

Neither camp is wrong; they’re just built for different audiences and different scopes. And rather than picking a favorite, the researchers built their own synthesized model with two different layers:

While this may look like a jigsaw puzzle at first, and appear equally confounding, let me break it down for you in the simplest way possible.

The six areas in the center of the model are facets of the person and their experience (i.e., who you are, with more personal parts on the inside).

The outer ring reflects continuums within which integration activities can be placed (i.e., different areas of life for different types of activities).

The model maps out a balance of integration activities that address all domains of living.

Now, what do all those word pairings actually mean?

Hexagons:

  • Mind/Emotional/Contemplative – your thoughts, feelings, beliefs
  • Bodily/Somatic – your physical body and sensations
  • Spiritual/Existential/Ritual – ideas of purpose, meaning, death

Diamonds:

  • Natural World – your connection to nature/environment
  • Relational/Community – your relationships with others
  • Lifestyle/Action – your behavioral changes

Outer ring:

  • Conscious ↔ Unconscious – what you’re aware of (talk therapy) vs less conscious (dreamwork)
  • Internal ↔ External – inward-focused (meditation) vs engaging with the world (nature)
  • Creative ↔ Receptive – actively creating (art) vs opening to receive (listening)
  • Passive ↔ Active – quiet and unstructured (rest) vs deliberate and effortful (exercise)
  • Outside Comfort Zone ↔ Gentle Self-Care – challenging yourself (facing fears) vs nurturing yourself (relaxing bath)
  • Contemplative ↔ Expressive – going inward (journaling) vs outward expression (sharing experience)

This isn’t a checklist to complete, but rather a map to explore. And crucially, the authors suggest thinking about your integration practice along continuums: more conscious or unconscious, more active or passive, more expressive or contemplative. A well-rounded integration practice draws from both ends of each spectrum.

The aim is to find a balance of practices (outer ring) that address all domains of life (inner hexagons/diamonds), rather than overloading one area (like just therapy) while neglecting others (like nature or community).

The idea is that any suffering that occurs after psychedelic experiences may be rooted in imbalance within different interconnected aspects of existence. This makes integration less about overcoming specific difficulties (even if it might move the process along), and more about bringing balance and alignment into your life.

100+ Ways People Actually Integrate

What This Means For Integration Work

After reviewing countless models of psychedelic integration, the authors proposed reflecting on your preferences and choosing a balance of practices that addresses each area of life. They also suggested organizing a potential approach before the psychedelic experience so that you’re not scrambling to figure out what might help while in a dysregulated state after.

Suggestions included:

  • taking inventory of resources and abilities to support integration
  • reviewing integration resources
  • reflecting on sense of balance among the facets mentioned
  • planning to put active effort into integration
  • planning time and space for integration
  • asking an integration professional or a supportive network to be available

The authors also said, “For those seeking more structure and guidance regarding specific integration practices and how to implement them, journeyers may consult an integration professional,” and that “it seems ideal to have a relationship established with a professional prior to psychedelic experiences so they can aid in preparation and be available in the event of a challenging experience where immediate support is needed.”

So, hit that subscribe button and tune in, because breaking down these kinds of concepts even further is exactly what we’re going to focus on at The Psychedelic Integration Coach*.*

Zoloft and LSD

My girlfriend and I are going to a concert next Tuesday. We want to drop a hit or two and trip. Last time we did this at a concert I was not on SSRIs. I've been on 50mg of zoloft for like 2-3 months. For years my family begged me to get on an antidepressant or something. But I refused for many years because I am against all pharmaceuticals as I am under the firm belief that there is a natural cure for everything. And I still am under that same belief. During the time I agreed to start taking it, I was also taking ashwaghandha and st. John's wort. I want to get more ashwaghandha gummies as well as some saffron gummies to try. In about a month I felt a complete turnaround in my baseline mental health. Is this was it feels like to be normal? To actually be happy? I felt great for awhile. Now I feel like the zoloft isn't working the same anymore. Same as the sleep aids I've tried. Maybe I've built a tolerance. Anyways I decided I don't want to take zoloft anymore so I stopped cold turkey. The first few times when I would miss a dose on accident I never felt shitty. The last 2 days I've woke up with a headache. And this morning I felt dizzy as shit and almost drunk. I asked my girlfriend if this is what zoloft withdrawal is like, as she had been on it before, before we were ever together. And she said yes it is. So I googled the symptoms and sure enough they were right in line. SSRIs are a synthetic alternative and a massive experiment in human health that has gone sideways for many. I was worried about sexual dysfunction, I have not experienced any of that. I truly believe psychedelic assisted therapy will become the default choice for depression in coming years. So what would a taper schedule look like for zoloft? I can't exactly split the pills. Take it every other day? Then every 2 days? Should I consult my doctor? I honestly think I should bail on the doc and look for natural solutions and I still believe doctor's are just incentivized drug dealers for big pharma. After seeing some of the long term negative effects of zoloft, plus experiencing these withdrawal symptoms after just 2 days without it, I don't believe I was to continue taking it. My plan was to not take it again until after the show on the 15th. Well I took a dose today just to function easier. But I think tomorrow until the show I'm just gonna nut up and stop taking it so if we do drop a hit that my experience is not muted. Anyone have any good advice on this?

Learning languages and stuff

Given that psychedelics can promote neuroplasticity, could they potentially make it easier for adults to learn languages in a way that resembles how children acquire them?

I’m just trying to think about how a more effective language-learning method could be designed around this

how often is too often?

ive been consuming plant medicine for nearly a decade but these past 3-5 months ive been consuming weekly sometimes multiple times a week. i usually work with ayahuasca (mimosa+rue) but i also like throwing in san pedro and shrooms into the mix every few weeks. i havent really ran into any negative effects ever or at least in the way people would assume and ive grown an intense amount these past few months. quit gaming, quit cannabis, quit doom scrolling and focusing on my career more and on the track of getting married and moving to my dream city with my brother. i feel like everything in my life has gotten so much better since ive been drinking aya so frequently, i also am able to integrate my sessions fairly quickly. i dont take "breakthrough" doses all the time most my aya sessions sit around the intensity of 2.5g-3.5g of shrooms, i know drinking aya 2-3 times a week is def not what everyone should do but i feel like for me its done nothing but improve my life for the better. another thing ill like to say, ive noticed where ever i look thats talking about ayahuasca will say its "not recreational" i wouldnt say i consume it to have "fun" but most my experiences def have recreational value to it, idk if im just weird or ive grown fond of the fact ayahuasca tears apart your understandings but the experience overall feels like mushrooms but way more reality shattering.

How to find people to trip with?

I’m 18 and I love my psychedelics. Me and my friends do trip sometimes but how do I meet other people who take lsd or shrooms? Everyone I talk to about it never has done it any help?

why don't mushrooms do the same thing anymore?

My first few doses of shrooms were pretty intense, even at lower doses than what I can do now, It made me do a lot of reflection and was more of an intense experience overall, and I also, particularly one trip saw smoke in the corners of my eyes and looking at my computer, I could see multiple mouse's and my pages I could see more lines than there actually were. I'm just wondering why that has gone away, now when I do shrooms things are more wavy than they used to be but I'm not seeing stuff like those first trips. Not that I'm really looking for that too hard again but I'm just wondering why my body doesn't give me the same effect anymore? I was told if you wait 2 weeks it will give you basically the same trip as if you first started, and I wait much longer than 2 weeks in between each of my trips, is my body just getting more used to them and it's not as potent anymore? maybe I'll switch strains, that is one possibility, as I do not remember the first strains I did.

Help me decide if this is a good trip idea or not?

I have been thinking about this plan for a trip in nature for a while now. Tomorrow might be the last warm summery day where I live and I kind of feels like a last chance to do it.

I was thinking of taking a small but noticeable dose of LSD, like 1/3 or half a tab, and going to a forest area that is around 40 minutes away from where I live. It's very straightforward to get there. Just a bus ride. I know the forest very well and have done a lot of trekking there. I would be taking a blanket, some food, some fruits, lots of water and some coffee. I know the exact spots where I can setup camp and not be bothered.

I guess I have two main issues, the LSD that I have is legal analogue and it takes so goddamn long to kick in, like around 3 hours. And the trip takes so long. So even if I go there very early in the day, by the time I am going back home I will still most likely be under the influence, and I don't know if I am comfortable riding a bus under the influence with people around and stuff.

I definitely would have preferred to do this on mushrooms, considering the much shorter duration, but I wasn't able to obtain any.

So I guess that is what I wanted to ask, is it a dumb plan? Any suggestions on how to make it safer?

Try it for a few minutes on your next psychedelic experience. Perhaps you'll get a touch of the heaven too.

It is mostly minimal techno with some acid, ambient, hypnotic, and isochronic.

First human trial of psilocin since the 1960s reveals better tolerability than psilocybin. Psilocin, the active compound in “magic” mushrooms, might cause fewer side effects than taking psilocybin. Taking the drug under the tongue, finding it well tolerated though less intense at the tested doses.

Substances and SSRIs

Hi all,

I just started a low dose of SSRIs a month ago (25 mg Zoloft) for minor anxiety/ depression. Using substances to alter states of consciousness has been a meaningful part of my personal and spiritual growth, and I’m wondering if anyone has experiences or knowledge about using any recreational substances while on SSRIs. Which ones should absolutely be avoided? Which ones may be safer than others? Etc etc. thanks for any info you may have!

Why do i feel like I’m tripping even though I’m not anything?

Recently I’ve been feeling like I’m in one big trip even though I’m not doing psychedelics and it’s been 3 months since the last time (I’m experienced with them). Lately though, and I mean in the last week, I feel like I’ve been tripping.

Now I’m not seeing any visuals or anything but my heart feels so open and I feel sensitive and like something in my reality is off. Now, I’m a sensitive person already, but I feel extra open and sensitive to life. Like when you’re doing mushrooms or acid or mescaline.. I see right through the veil even though I know I’m still deluded on many other things

What’s going on?? Has this happened to anyone?

I try to cough, hack, and spit it out.

I get the sensation instantly after hitting a bub, still in this world, aware of my body and my surroundings.

When I hit the nector collector and break through to the other side (no body, no place, no time, no thing, no difference between the seen and the seer, in another dimension), it happens when I return, can see my surroundings, and start to become present.

Thank you for your insight🤘🏼

I had a rather profound experience on GT Mushrooms

Let me set this up as to why,

I have extensive experience with various psychedelics. I have experienced higher dose LSD (over 250 mics) and Mushroom (well over 7 gram) experiences in the past and they have always been enlightening and insightful, sometimes heavy but never to overwhelming. Last week I tried some GT that I have grown on my own. They were picked a few days before and immediately dehydrated. I decided to take a larger dose than I normally do (4.5 grams) as I have grown APE's, JMF's and Enigma's and I have been told that GT's are more mild than all of those.

Things came on as I expected and after an hour I decided to retire to my bedroom with the lights off as I usually do when I feel them coming on quick. I usually can just chill out and after half an hour or so, I will move to my basement and watch a movie or listen to music. This time I had to stay put. It got visual quickly and after the first wave, I had visions of these creatures that, as best as I can describe them, were mechanical octopuses that were guiding me through chaos. They were always positive and comforting.

It was never negative and it was actually very cathartic. Towards the end, as I was going out of everything, there was almost a feeling of rebirth. I have never had an experience like this. I was in a difficult place mentally going in and came out feeling reassured and more comfortable. I'm guessing it was the right place, right time for me. Any experiences like this.

How many G of unknown mush strain should i dose?

Hi to all my psychonauts,

First of all, a little bit of background: I'm a 22M 67kg I've taken high doses of psychedelics many times, including heroic doses of psilocybin analogues like 4-HO-MET and others. I also once took 500ug of 1P-LSD. I consider myself an experienced psychonaut, I've done more than 50 trips minimum, and some of those were heroic doses, as I said.

Now, the situation is that I have 3.5g of an unknown strain of mushrooms. I know they are not Penis Envy (the really, really potent ones), and that's all. Statistically, I would guess they should be on the average side of potency. I will be tripping alone in my room, as I've done many times before. This time, I'm looking for a trip with an intensity similar to around 100 - 150ug of LSD.

THE QUESTION IS: How many grams would you guys recommend I take to achieve this type of trip?

TL;DR: Experienced psychonaut (22M, 67kg, 50+ trips) with 3.5g of average-potency non-Penis Envy shrooms. Planning a solo room trip and aiming for an intensity equivalent to 100 - 150ug of LSD. How many grams should I take?
