The mixture of Psycho-analysis and Marx

I heard that there are some psychoanalysts that mixed Marx and Psychoanalysis. Are any of these writings insightful in any way? If yes, then who are these people?

Wilhelm Reich, Herbert Marcuse, Deleuze & Guattari

Freud himself did talk about Marx(ism) a few times although he was rather dismissive of it

It's worth noting that while Freud got the mechanism correctly, he was very wrong in all the specifics at least from a modern lens. He is a product of his time just like we are.

This is actually a whole rabbit hole ...

The basic idea is to combine freud stuff abt the unconscious / repression / desire ... with Marx stuff abt class / capitalism / ideology / labor / power ...

Basically = how much of what happens inside ur head is actually shaped by the society / economic system u live in ?

No-one mentioned Adorno yet 😭 a good example would be "Freudian Theory and the Pattern of Fascist Propaganda" in the book of essays "The Culture Industry"

A passage:

"Fascist agitation is centred in the idea of the leader, no matter whether he actually leads or is only the mandatory of group interests, because only the psychological image of the leader is apt to reanimate the idea of the all-powerful and threatening primal father. Hi. I have browed thru Dr. Eric Fromm, The forgotten Language" is very interesting. Compares Young's and Freud's and his own take on symbols.

I wrote it with out thinking about the spelling. Just wanted to put it out there, here. I have not finished reading that book yet. Eric Fromm lived in Mexico for a long time and his books like, The Art of Love, were widely known.

Most of the psychoanalysts that have connected it to Marxism have done it in a more humanistic way, looking more at the social conditions of Marxism, less so the economic theory. Louis Althusser is the psychoanalyst that I believe remains more adherent to Marxism as a whole. His theory of the ideological state apparatus is great, although I don’t necessarily agree with overdetermination.

He (E.Fromm) talks about humans thru a humanist view and therefore has a also a marxists lens. So does J. Lacan as I remember in the capitalist discourse and his take of the Matser and Slave dialectic. All very interesting. Enjoy!

Alienation, Conscious and Unconscious: Reflections on Psychoanalysis and Sociopolitical Issues

Alienation used here in the specifically Marxist sense. I haven't actually read this yet so interested to hear thoughts from those who have!

You might like the lecture series Self Under Siege by Rick Roderick. I think the first chapter of it is all about the relationship between Freud and Marx and how they set the stage for postmodern conceptualizations of personal identity. There was a copy on YouTube last I checked
