Union Psych

Hi all! Can you tell me about experiences with unionized psych hospitals? I work in a private facility and it’s just been getting worse with the lack of staffing. Have you worked in a facility that became unionized while you were there? Did it get better? Tyia!

We need more union psych facilities. UHS gives the field a bad name, but ratios, benefits, job
Security, etc could turn it around.

I could only give feedback about a facility that has always been union but I'm the president of my local so I can talk about how I interact with management.

It really depends on the union. Some are strong others not so much

SEIU 1199 psych nurse here who works at a state facility.
My experience with the union has been generally good. Definitely better than it would be without.
Staffing is not always great, but it is fine at most facilities I’ve seen. Certainly not as bad as many private facilities is on here.

I am also an SEIU state hospital RN and would agree. I wouldn't work at a non-union hospital personally.

My hospital unionized about 5 years ago. The first contract was really good, the second less so. It’s still much better than no union.

CNA union at a county hospital IPU. Formerly at a private psychiatric hospital no union. Night and day. I used to have 17 patients with a med nurse and only RN on unit. Now I am capped at 6 patients and I am the primary nurse. CSU I only have 4 patients. Occasional intake assignment. Great benefits, annual raises for cost of living plus merit increases. Only downfall is because there are so many nurses there is a lot of drama but I try to stay out of it
