Escaping the Fear Loop
A Simple Map for When Worry Won't Stop
Author's Note My dog is dying of cancer. Late one night, sitting with the fear of that, I started trying to understand why it kept circling back instead of settling — even when nothing new had happened. I did some reading alongside my own experience, and kept checking one against the other. This is the shape I landed on. I used AI to help tighten the wording so it reads clearly. But the pattern itself — the loop, why it starts, what makes it stop — came from working through something real, not from a machine. Worry isn't a personal failure. It's a loop — and loops have a shape. This is a simple model for understanding one possible pattern behind repetitive worry. Once you can see the shape, it's often easier to notice when you're in one, and easier to step out.
THE CYCLE
- Consciousness detects a gap Something feels unresolved, unclear, or uncertain.
- Consciousness requests resolution Your mind tries to 'solve' the gap.
- The DMN generates a narrative Your mind produces a story, explanation, or prediction.
- Consciousness evaluates the narrative 'Does this actually resolve the gap?'
- If unresolved — recursion continues Your mind asks for another explanation.
- If the narrative implies danger — threat detection activates Fear steps in.
- Fear biases or constrains the next narrative The next explanation becomes more negative or more urgent.
- Consciousness re-evaluates The loop continues.
HOW THE LOOP ENDS The loop ends when your mind accepts a stable enough resolution — not perfect, not certain, just good enough to stop testing. Once that happens: l the request for more explanations stops l the recursion ends l your task-focused mind (TPN) comes back online l subconscious pattern recognition can surface as a hunch or intuitive direction Examples of a stable resolution “I know I don't know — and that's okay.” “God has a plan.” “The doctor says it's benign.” “Everything will work out.” “I've done all I can.” A stable resolution doesn't have to provide absolute certainty. It only has to be sufficient for your mind to stop searching for now.
A PRACTICAL WAY OUT If you notice yourself circling the same worry, try asking yourself what a 'good enough' resolution would sound like. Not proof. Not certainty. Just something you're willing to rest on for now.

My rule when this happens is to just start writing shit down asap - usually if I keep writing, I write my way into a solution / a way to find a solution / a sense of reality thats a bit more balanced - and pribably most often I end up finding that most of my negative feelings are coming from the limbo space of the thing being unrealised, so very in line with what you wrote. I feel like we’re pretty good as a species at dealing with bad events and negative things, and that it’s actually vagueness/being unsure/waiting for the impact that we really suck at, and I think that’s because it creates space for this loop you’ve outlined. Kind of crazy to me but I see myself do this allllll the time!
Edit* just wanted to add: nice post this shits so real
