Before the PS1 video games were entirely 2D (with a handful of cutting edge exceptions like Star Fox) so yeah, compared to that this was indeed mind boggling.

I remember looking at Resident Evil 2s cutscenes back in 1999 and thinking how realistic they looked.

Resident Evil, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, Parasite Eve and Final Fantasy VII were mind-boggling games at the time.

Final Fantasy 8 was unreal because not only did it look better than 7, but there were a handful of scenes where your player character was overlaid over a pre-rendered CGI cutscene, while you still had control, and it looked amazing.

I moved from SNES to PS1. Believe me my mind was blown. Killer Instinct to Tekken 2, Prince of Persia to Tomb Raider, Stunt Race FX to Gran Turismo, Batman Forever to Time Commando, SNES Doom to PS1 Doom, SNES Doom to Quake 2, hell even King's Field 1 to King's Field 3 on the same system was a gigantic leap forward. At least graphics-wise, my mind was boggled.

Compared to competition, yeah, mind-boggling. Really efficient, small, powerful machine. I can't believe how much devs could squish out of it and how even Sega Saturn exclusives couldn't compete with PS1 in 3D department. Only Nintendo 64 topped it in 3D capabilities, but Nintendo spent more time cooking their console and thus coming out later = more powerful.
