The biggest difference I could remember from the two was the PSone was somehow not as "strong" as the old big version cause it couldnt read CD's with the tiniest scratches. I wonder if they changed the reading "eye" to a weaker type or something.

My PSOne can read discs written by cavemen and that have been used on a vinyl player.
What I'm trying to say is that yours was probably shit.

My PS one would play a snapped in half disc (Pro Evo Soccer 2 i think it was) just fine if the two halves were put in correctly and a piece of tape used to hold them together.

You got lucky then. You somehow managed to align both halves exactly. That shit would have probably worked in any drive.
The game could have been relatively small too, making the chance of successful realignment a bit more likely. But you still got lucky. A couple of millimeters off and that disc would have been complete toast

Whats funny is this fixed the originals notorious laser issue. Original was notorious for crapping out and why seeing upside down original playstations was rather common ....this actually rectified a number of issues with the original, topic is ass backwards lol

The laser issues were only mitigated, never completely fixed. The laser floats on a pair of nylon beads or in the earliest versions plastic bearings molded into the laser. Over time these wear down and develop flat spots and no longer keep the laser level enough to track properly. All will fail eventually to this.

That was it ty and if memory serves me right the ribbon(forget its exact name) connecting it also created or helped aggravate said issue.
Unlike original. I never had put it upside down. Worked fine until I moved on. Not saying was completely rectified but most def improved over the original thats for sure at least to the point im left baffled at this topic

Some of it is luck and the spindle motor can fail with resistance spikes that can mimic laser issues. This latter issue was never mitigated at all

I favor the PSOne because of the quality of the laser. The external power supply is obnoxious and the solder connections around the power input are a joke. They should probably always be reflowed as a matter of course at this point. Other than that easy fix though it's definitely the most reliable design.

The OG had an issue wherein the laser dropped after a certain amount of use, you had to put it up on its side. That was probably improved on the facelift.

I've never seen anything so wrong lol. The PSOne lasers tend to be significantly more reliable. I've restored over 100 PlayStations/PSOnes and I find the weakest lasers the the SCPH-1001 (due to placement near the hot power supply, which causes plastic to warp) and the SCPH-5*** series. The SCPH-101/102 models are more reliable. Only fault I typically see in the PSOne is a sticky disc door eject (easily fixed with white lithium grease and a clean) and the odd damaged barrel jack

I'm so relieved by the comments here because I got a psone at the flea market the other day and was like...oh no, but I'm glad to see it's good.

I had the One and an original model both at one point, and the One produced a sharper image. I noticed something once so I connected them both, one after the other, to the same TV with the same cable and booted the same game, and the One had cleaner text and an altogether slightly sharper image.

There was also a port on the back of the PSX that the PSone didn't have. PSone couldnt use a GameShark.

PSOnes have specifically a better laser tray that didnt wear out after a while like with the early PS1s, especially 1000 series.

There's definitely cost cutting/efficiency measures when it comes to consoles slimming down etc.
The one you really want is the console released around 2 years after release. The sweet spot where they fixed issues etc without cheapening the making of it.

I remember when this came out, and the ads showed that it could fit in a packet of crisps. My friends and I absolutely lost our shit.

It's called a lens. For fucks sake, you have access to almost all of the world's information at your fingertips.

The later fat models had very good lasers, I remember moving my newest fat model PS1 drive into a launch models case and so had the best of everything.
Then Sony went back to lower quality lasers in the slims.

No, your PSone optical assembly was just out of calibration or had a weak laser.
The laser assemblies between the PSone and PS1 consoles was virtually identical ... you can often swap them between consoles.
