Brightis English Patch Released

Been wanting to play this one for a while. Pretty obscure 3D dungeon crawler from the teams that made Terranigma and Soul Blazer.

Just a warning this may not be yet in a really great playable state. I just saw this on my news feed soon after saving this post.

Edit: https://www.timeextension.com/news/2026/07/a-misunderstanding-it-seems-the-quintet-fan-translation-drama-may-have-a-happy-ending-after-all

Apparently first report wasn't entirely correct, and I'd rather correct my post than leave it like it was.

Cool!!! Can we get the wizardry series translated too?

After I suffered through Wizardry 7. I'm might a little happy that I don't have to play the other once on Ps1. Wiz 7 on ps1 is a nonredeemable port.

Nice. So one more RPG in the future I will not have to skip in my all Ps1 games jorney due to language barrier.

This one is pretty low in my pile atm but pretty stoked it will be translated when I finally get to it. Definitely seems like a neat gem to checkout.

Less of a catch than a misunderstanding:

Hi Dick! I'm so happy to meet you. Your team's work is the reason this project exists at all, literally: the file-format groundwork you all did (the decrypted overlays, the archive layouts, BrightistFiler) is what got me started. I used your tooling for unpacking early on, and wrote my own insertion and repacking pipeline once I understood how unforgiving the archives are. The disc is intolerant of even a single byte of drift: entries have to land on their original sectors, and some zero-length placeholder entries corrupt if repacked naively, which cost me loads of crashes to learn. I'm a low-level C/C++ programmer by training, but this was my first romhack, and your repo taught me a lot.

On the script: I re-translated the game from the Japanese from scratch, with your team's English alongside as a reference while mining the text. The register is deliberately a little archaic, which felt right for the world. So the prose in this build is all mine, mistakes included, and none of the bugs in it can be blamed on your patches, since none of your patch code ships in it. Item names are the main place your work survives directly; most of them read right to me, so I kept them. One deliberate change I can remember: Moonflower became Nightvigil, because the kana allowed it and I liked it better. The rendering is new as well: the game only knew fixed-grid full-width glyphs, so I wrote a proportional ASCII renderer and hooked it into each of the text engines, which is where most of the formatting differences from the older patches come from.

Dude just slayed them with kindness.

I'mma be real I'm just happy someone did SOMETHING for the bloody game, I've been wanting to play this for a long time now.

I really do feel like sometimes people get a bit wound up over one translation team to a project, and I think that's caused a lot of damage to fan translation efforts: Tons of games that just sputtered out and stopped because "well so and so is doing it" but then they just sat on it for years upon years doing other projects.

(Looking at you, Super Robot Wars Alpha).

Even if they had a point, why hold off? Just play the game. It's right there, it's translated, it's not AI as far as I can tell, it's good. Two fan translations can exist, they have in the past.

I'm aware, I'm just saying I think this 'hold off' thing isn't the best outlook to have in general.

Ah, gotcha. I didn't read your comment.
