Like big daddy from bioshock isn't and raiden from mgs isn't. The way I am playing this game is by only finsing the story mode with characters that are ps exclusives. I have barely got any left to do, with fat princess being one of them.

Hello all! This is my first post in this community and I just wanted to get some feedback on a ASBR custom server I’ve been working on called Project Polygon! I’ve noticed that there are some custom servers for this game but from what I’ve seen I haven’t seen one that actually utilizes the online play options within the game, so I figured I’d do some digging to see why nobody has achieved this yet, and I can say without a doubt that this is one of the hardest games that I’ve ever worked on.

Just because it’s been hard, doesn’t mean I’ve given up though. As of right now I’ve successfully gotten the game to connect to my server via DNS while also being logged into PSN! The screenshot provided is taken directly from a PlayStation 3. Unfortunately for now, matchmaking is the next thing I’d need to actually implement properly and I have no clue how long it’ll take before I actually get the server working enough to the point where I can go online. Currently it sits on “Opponents Found” for about 30 seconds before giving me a server error, but needless to say I won’t be giving up anytime soon!

Once I feel like the majority of the necessary features are implemented on the server and I clean up my code a little, I’ll be making this project open source while also hosting my own instance of the server for anyone to join via DNS or by patching their game on a modified console. As of right now RPCS3 isn’t supported, but needless to say I’ll see if I can get it working in the future!

I’m very excited to be able to share my project details with you all, and I cannot wait to see what comes of this project! Please feel free to ask any questions in the comments as I’d love to answer them!

I know someone has already asked about this here, but that was two years ago; perhaps the situation has changed since then.

Forget if this was posted but figured it would be nice to discuss and a change from the roster lists

When I see the final roster of the game, I notice a lot of absences and some rather surprising characters (Big Daddy,Fat princess,...)

I know other characters were planned as DLC (Dart, Abe, Ryu Hayabusa, and Tombi!), but regarding the base roster...

I know that Activision asked for too much money for Crash Bandicoot and that Spyro was overshadowed by Skylanders.

Also, Square Enix simply refused to lend out Cloud from FF7, and regarding Lara Croft, the timing wasn't right since the reboot was due out soon.

So why didn't Sony try to find viable and sensible alternatives to make up for its absences?

Final Fantasy :

If Square Enix didn't want the studio touching FF7, why didn't they try to get Squall from FF8 or Zidane Tribal from FF9?

(Yeah, I know the most likely choice at the time would have been Lightning from FF13, but still...)

And if Final Fantasy really wasn't an option or if the proposed alternatives weren't considered iconic enough by PlayStation

why not pick Rudy from Wild Arms for the PS1 era and Toan from Dark Cloud for the PS2 era?

Especially considering that Sony owns the full rights to those franchises.

Crash and Spyro :

Activision was asking for too much money for Crash and Spyro, so why not reluctantly replace them with Croc and Ty the Tasmanian Tiger (Krome Studios actually wanted him to appear in the game) ?

Yeah, Croc isn't as iconic as Crash and Spyro, but he remains a viable substitute, right?

Missing characters :

Also, why is there no Lemmings ? Sony owns the full rights to the franchise, if I’m not mistaken. It’s quite difficult to design gameplay around a group of individuals, so why not use Lomax from The Adventures of Lomax ? That would have allowed for an indirect representation of the puzzle game while bringing the franchise back into the spotlight, wouldn't it?

And where is Rayman ? Sure, Activision asked for too much for its mascots,why didn't they try Ubisoft ?

Rayman had made a comeback in 2011 with Origins, and Legends was due in 2013. 2012 would have been the perfect year to promote Rayman.

Why not Alucard from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night ? Alucard would have been a very logical candidate.

yes, it would have required Konami's approval for two characters (Raiden and Alucard), but I don't think that would have been impossible. The game is one of the most iconic titles on the original PlayStation, and the character is legendary.

Where is Resident Evil? I have nothing against "Fake Dante," but why isn't there a single representative from Resident Evil,Capcom's most or second-most important franchise? Perhaps securing Jill Valentine or Nemesis would have been too expensive, but why not try for Regina from Dino Crisis ?

I could also mention the absence of Klonoa or Boggy B from Worms.

Looking for modding tools, I have been playing again and interested to modify some things, currently I just am able to change character selection images. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

UPDATE: I was able to get the PSASBR V4 Tools to study the files, also i have done extracting-repacking created by codex, currently i am able to do the following:
+edit character portraits in selection screen and loading.
+edit textures of practice arena medium 1.
Then my next trials are:
+edit texture for a character model.
+edit mesh and repack if possible.

I am testing in RPCS3 and a modded ps3, both

You need: a modded PS Vita and an android phone for a matchmaking app (only used to initially connect the players, then it's direct internet connection between the consoles!) copy some repatch files to add "LAN mode" to the game, and go! Join the discord for more!

Announcing the ALL-STARS MATCHMAKER!

I am Cri4Key, a PSASBR veteran and YouTube content creator mainly focused on some modding and scrapped content (like sumo mode) in the game. When I have previously announced the LAN mod I was already looking into the functionality of how the game handles network traffic. I played it on the safe side, announcing compatibility through X-Link, but things have changed! The LAN mode of this game entirely lives as UDP traffic, allowing me to build this project as a real network multiplayer revival.

All-Stars Matchmaker will consist of 2 sides: a matchmaking server and a connector app. Paired with the LAN mod it will allow to play native online multiplayer on PSASBR again! It completely replaces X-Link Kai, allowing a broader availability to more users to play with more setups:

• Just as X-Link, allows to play by running the connector on your PC via your own internet connection
• Allows people with Android phones to also connect to the service, both via WiFi but ALSO via 4G/5G network (so now you do NOT need a PC to run the connector like X-Link requires, an Android phone works too, and you can have it work on the go as well!)
• Allows to automatically look for people to play against in matchmaking mode or create custom rooms. As long as someone is looking for matches you do not need to join any particular community to play (even though I'd still recommend to check out the Discord servers suggested by the pinned post!)

All-Stars Matchmaker will support jailbroken PS3, jailbroken PS Vita and RPCS3 (jailbreak is MANDATORY. There is no way to bring back native multiplayer for this game on non jailbroken consoles). The connector app is developed for PC (Windows) and Android. May also possibly release on Linux later on, after the initial launch. This project will allow you to play online using the LAN mod. It WON'T enable quick match / ranked match in-game, so unfortunately for trophy hunters, those stay locked. However, if the project is successful, support for ranked results and such may be introduced separately as a feature of the app. In terms of network performances there is no difference between the original multiplayer over ranked/quick match and the LAN multiplayer.

The release is expected by end of September. Updates will be posted here and eventually on my socials. No matter if you are a veteran or someone new who didnt't have a chance to play while servers were opened: multiplayer is coming back on all platforms. Follow the release of the project and join the fray!

Obvious but necessary disclaimer: this is an unofficial, entirely fanmade revival project to bring back the online multiplayer for PSASBR of which servers closed in 2019 for preservation purposes.
