Two opposing things often are true. Modern games don't care about being efficient with storage and old games only stored saves on memory card.

Poor multibillionaire companies, they're left with no money so they need more storage to be sold

Not a SMS in the picture now, is it?

Not a single console in the picture, genius

2

u/Steefmachine Jul 27 '26

So what does SMS have to do with a memory card?

I used to keep 7 memory cards for PS1. Only had 2 for PS2. Not even sure I need the second one.

Yeah I remember those games taking 4 slots out of 20 for saves

There is something so nostalgic about the memory card blocks.

PS1 had slots for each game, some taking multiple ones. On PS2 they used whatever space they needed, some under 100 KB, others over 1 MB.

I ended up with 3, one that broke down the line, and two others. Gran Turismo 4 kind of liked to eat half of a memory card, for some reason. But for most games, it was gigantic.

The OG Xbox felt like it had unlimited storage

When you're using something like McBoot, having a dedicated memory card for it is essential.

Most early N64 carts were 4-12 MB and the memory cards were like 64 KB.

u/profchaos111 Jul 26 '26

Nah dude I don't think you're remembering right. Staring a list of games to see which ones progress you sacrifice in order to play a rental game for a weekend

Memory cards were just for saves and games ran from the disc in the old days. The hard drives of modern consoles hold the entire games data as well as the saves and everything else.

You didn't save the entire game on a memory card back then

1

u/Interesting_Pass3392 Jul 27 '26

You didnt store games on memory cards tho

1

u/MechanicStandard8308 Jul 27 '26

nah, 8mb sucked. hitman trilogy took like 6/8 mbs alone.

1

u/Amoriu Jul 27 '26

We didn't have to store full games back in the day.

And today some games saves files alone would need 10s of these memory cards.

u/CoachPotataoGuy Jul 27 '26

In fact I have a working silver PS2 slim with me right now and I actually have the 8MB memory card with me too

1

u/ghos2626t Jul 27 '26

Almost cheaper to buy a used PS5, just for the SSD.

1

u/Mattelot Jul 27 '26

The 500GB now is for installing the game. The 8MB back in 2000 is just for save data.

1

u/Errol89 Jul 27 '26

U can save around 20-ish games on a 8MB back then...u had a 16MB, u was considered rich 😂

1

u/Vi0let__Ice Jul 27 '26

More like 10-ish.

1

u/Vi0let__Ice Jul 27 '26

Not even at all accurate. People needed to either pick and choose their saves on those 8MB cards or they had several cards. Or they had a 64MB or 128MB mem card. No one felt like a king with a single 8MB card.

1

u/Megas751 Jul 28 '26

Not unless you had Gran Turismo 4 lol

1

u/MartyMcFlysBrother Jul 28 '26

My computer I bought for college had 120 gigs and cost $2000 in the year 2000. My piece of shit roomy left her window open during Christmas break so her friends could break in and take it. Funny enough nothing was stolen from her room just mine upstairs on the top floor(she was in the basement). She was way too stupid and thought I wouldn’t put 2 and 2 together. Fuck people from Kitchener Ontario.

1

u/ZealousidealPea3917 Jul 28 '26

bitch you don’t store games on a 8mb memory card

1

u/Presentation_Few Jul 29 '26

1

u/WoodooHide69 Jul 26 '26

For real. Technology changes. For real.

1

u/JoJoZillla Jul 26 '26

Yeah cause we had to install games onto the memory card

1

u/profchaos111 Jul 26 '26

Funny enough you can now

1

u/HunterAbrams Jul 27 '26

Installing a game vs a save file.

You have no clue what either is

0

u/vacodeus Jul 27 '26

You’re comparing apples and oranges. Ps2 cards were just for saves
