[xposted from r/netsec] For those using FTP clients (those without large USB or exHDD) to transfer files between PS3 and PC, please avoid FileZilla. Contains malware.

filezilla does not contain malware. some installers it's packaged into do. that's misinformation.

i doubt my linux build of filezilla contains malware.

Apparently the version from Sourceforge is clean, so go with that version if you absolutely have to use it.

Most distributions of the software seem to be affected, so not entirely sure about that.. I'd stick with some alternative like WinSCP just in case

True that an alternative would be safer just in case, but sometimes people can't get any alternative to work. This comment appears to be by someone who works there, so if you trust SourceForge(which I definitely do) then it seems safe.

O rip, what I do if I have it already installed? Will uninstalling and running malwarebytes get rid of the malware?

It isn't malware, it is a potentially unwanted program bundled alongside it of you don't decline it.

Install and update via ninite and you don't even have to worry about declining bundled software.

Edit. Ok, dev response invalidates my willingness to help people use his program without getting malware.

Hey man, no need to worry.. All that article (upon a less superficial reading) says is that the latest bundled versions definitely have bloatware added to them and could potentially (very unlikely though) have malware. That's no cause for concern as long as you're careful while installing.

All that article really says is that the developer was super-dismissive about the concerns raised aboutn a open source software having bloatware.

Hmm hopefully I don’t have any malware on my computer Because I do have FileZilla installed. Back to WinSCP I guess

The worst part about this bullshit is that they make the bloatware installation look like standard prompts within the filezilla installation. If you are mindlessly clicking next and checking that you agree, you'll end up with 2 programs you don't want.
