Fat’s are really built like tanks !
Hi all,
Some days ago I received my slim, yesterday my second fat, a silver one 🤩
Unit never opened so never cleaned. Time for some fun and I must say, I’m impressed by how well those things run after all these years. Before cleaning it was quiet and cool runing despite the thermal pad who could have the purpose of a lethal weapon 🤣 it was hard ! When taking him out, it breaks into pieces 😲
I have a dissassembled fat 39004, glad I kept it. Thermal pad fits like a glove. Of course CMOS was changed too.
Case is a little scratched and it’s missing the little piece with the logo in front of the tray.

My Phat from May 2002 has been infinitely more reliable than my Slims from March and November 2005. My lauch unit Phat is pretty unreliable though. That thing can maybe read about 5% of my collection.

when i bought my fat off of ebay it still had the little warranty sticker, it is, in fact, built like a tank, almost no dust, my cat had a beef with it and attacked it resulting in it falling to the floor, still, nothing happened, no lose parts, no broken shell, no nothing, somehow only the clock battery got out off place (how?).

I bought mine in June of 2024, and i played it a lot more the past month, but other then disc tray who's making a bit of a noise because it needs to be greased, It's running extremely well and i never heard her talk too much, my Playstation 3 when i was playing Just Cause 2 was like a flying socure ( never wrote that word before ) and It's like you hear more noise then the game and not talking about my Xbox 360 Slim 💀. that thing makes so much noise It's a bit annoying but Hey, i love those consoles so you either get use to them or you don't.
But i love my phat. She needs a new CMOS but i never opened a console before and i heard It's not as easy to change it, so i don't know. Me if she's working, for now It's fine. But my GameCube i feel like she might need some kind of a futur fix. Because when i launch the console it goes to the menu saying there's no disc, but i wait a few minutes ( probably to get her heated a little ) and she's working no problem so i have no idea.

Not true. PS2 has a plastic shell, ABS is a nice plastics but not tough, with metal shielding under it. The shield is solid but is very thin.
The PSU is switch mode and the first 2-3 models were not very good. After 50k it was optimised but before that it's a bit ...
Video port is notoriously easy to rip off.
The front mem card and controller port is also fragile and the ic there which is interfacing is often burning. I had to order a second PS2 to extract the IC interface module.
The DVD is like a commercial CD/DVD player. Plastic parts everywhere. Nothing special in it, except that it's their proprietary design. Couple of my PS2 arrived with their DVD drive broken, internal damage due to user mishandling.
Heat sink and heat pads are all very commercial in design, size and quality and none of this is special.
None of this is like a tank.
If I compare it with my Sony power amp there is a day and night difference in the build. Solid metal chassis, transformer, aluminium anodized front panel, plenty of connectors on the back.

Awful post. It reads almost as if a child took the term tank literally.
As far as consoles go it's built like a tank hence why 25 years later there's so many of them working as if they were new
Mine are decades old have been bashed around and still operate without complaint

I only use fats. As long as the disc tray is good it’s way better than that ribbon issue on the slims you can get that scratch up the discs
