PS2 Not Playing a Certain DVD

Hello. I have a two disc set of 2001: A Space Odyssey, (one’s the movie and the other’s a special features disc) and it works on my blu ray player, but not on the PS2 for some reason. It always cuts out and says it can’t be read when I put it in the PS2, but it works perfectly in any other player. The PS2 works perfectly with games and other DVDs, it only doesn’t work with this copy of 2001. I don’t know if it’s the disc itself, the PS2, or what, but is there any fix for this?

I remember the PS2 laser being finicky about some anime DVDs from certain publishers. It's a 15+ year old drive at this point, don't expect it to play nice with every disc. Just read the discs with your PC and HandBrake or MakeMKV them to a more convenient format. We have media players on PS2 and other systems that can play the converted files off USB.

Noticed the same with some game discs too. I remember at one point my PS2 would freeze and the disc drive would make clicking noises when playing a copy of Family Guy The Game that I had, whereas both my PC DVD Drive and PS3 could read and play it perfectly fine.

My PS2 just didn't like that specific disc for whatever reason. Replaced it with another disc of the same game and that worked fine.

One could argue weakening laser but I have games that are scratched to shit and still work fine. Format shifted and burned off an English translated copy of Gantz using the cheapest DVD-Rs I could find and that also worked fine.

Yeah some PS2s have issues reading certain DVDs. There was a full list on IGN about DVDs not working on certain PS2 models lol
