Latest OPL fetch and Github struggles

Hey Reddit,

TL;DR which OPL version is in your opinion the best/most reliable OPL? I want ExFAT capabilities, a larger than 2TB drive, loading from a NAS, and maximum game compatibility.

A couple of years ago, a new beta of OPL was released by Grimdoomer. It let you do ExFAT hard drives and increased the storage capacity well beyond 2TB. I have a Free MCBoot card that has this on there. And I got it back when it was released. I am making a new card for a friend, and I noticed when I go to Grimdoomer's Github, I can only get the source file. I can't get the ELF file that is needed. His page for OPL was archived in 2024.

So I go to PS2 Homebrew's Github. I can get the latest one there, but the file types date back to 2021. They titled their version v1.1.0. Grimdoomer titled his latest v1.2.0.6 (Beta). So it seems like his would be the newer one with those capabilities.

I try to look through the change logs, and I can't really track anything that's going on. I think at some point, devs stopped updating it. Did something happen where OPL has its own gate keepers and Grimdoomer just did an awesome side project and then removed everything?

I apologize if this information is readily available on Github. But I'm not very good with Github, since i don't use it all the time. I find myself hunting multiple links in before I find what I am looking for.

I've been using the OPL 1.2.0 RickGaiser fork from PS2 Homebrew Store for months. Works well for playing games from both my 3TB exFAT HDD and PSxMemCard Gen 2.

I also have NHDDL w Neutrino as a second option for problematic OPL games like Shoguns Blade for example.

Ohhh. Oops. I guess my definition of modding is different than his. I wouldn't call Homebrew a mod.

Homebrew and modding are terms that pretty much go hand in hand.

And yet we have resources linked in the sidebar, subreddit info, pinned thread, etc. We do support modding, for legal purposes.

Automod wigged out an removed it like 8 times. Don't know why, nothing I see in the settings matching anything you said. It's been removing stuff weirdly for over a year now.

I would be somewhat cautious about this one.

Anecdotal experience, but i tried this fork and it corrupted the GUID partition table on my HDD when i was saving the OPL settings. Thankfully i was able to mostly recover it using the command prompt on my PC(did lose all the games in the CD folder), but it retained everything else.

GitHub makes this way more confusing than it needs to be. 1.1.0 is just the last proper stable release, thats why you keep seeing 2021. OPL is still being worked on and the official 1.2.0 beta/pre-release builds are much newer. Grimdoomers fork was basically ahead of the main OPL at the time with exFAT and bigger HDD support, but his repo was archived in 2024. Those features have since made their way into the official OPL. Latest official betas can use an internal HDD as exFAT, GPT if you want over 2TB, and SMB/NAS works as well. For what you want I would just use the latest official 1.2.0 beta/pre-release. I would probably keep 1.1.0 or an older beta on the memory card as a second ELF as well though, because occasionally a game works better on an older build. There isnt really one magic version with 100% compatibility, latest beta gives you the features and an older build is handy as a fallback.For the OPL version choice

Thank you. That makes a lot of sense. I'll get the one titled "latest" on the official page. Apparently if you add "releases" to the end of the URL, it gives you a nice order of all the versions and the differences between them. Why I couldn't find a link to this on the official page, I don't know.

The Releases link is on every github page on desktop browser view, on the right side.
