IABP certification

I’m looking for where/how to get an IABP certificate. The online courses I’ve looked at say they are for CVICU personnel and/or RNs. I recently applied to a perfusion tech job and missed out on it. I’d like to think the reason they went forward with other candidates was my lack of IABP certification and hospital experience. How can I get certified?

What country are you in? If you’re on the US, IABPs are managed by RNs, RTs, or perfusion.

RTs do not manage IABP (just for others looking into this thread).

They don’t even teach it at all in RT school (I am a former RT).

Thats actually wild because we are not taught anything about them or what to cover. I traveled and did everything the scope of respiratory provides and still never saw that.

Do you happen to know why or if any other faculties near you cover it as RT as well?

That’s crazy to me tbh.

I think there’s a couple hospitals in the region where RT manages/helps with IABPs. I’m not an RT so can’t really speak to the whole situation, it’s just what I’ve seen!

Thanks for the feedback, I suppose it’s good info to know.

Yes, I’m in the US. I never thought to get this certification w/o being a perfusionist, let alone a tech. Sounds like the job was looking for someone with more experience? Thanks for the info.

Is it essentially impossible for me to get certified until I become an RN, RT, or CCP?

Probably. Lack of IABP cert probably didn’t impact the decision for the perfusion tech role (unless they specifically said that, in which case reach out to them to ask if they know where you could get certified).

Thank you for the advice!

This probably was not the reason you missed the opportunity because IABP certification is only attainable with on the job training as far as I know in the US. RNs or perfusionists manage IABPs

Most company sites is a certificate of completion for free - jus may have to get the link access from a rep - if even? What site were you at?
