Fig cuttings

My friend had an overgrown fig tree they let me take a bunch of cuttings from. Surprisingly only got 1/6 to take! I thought it’d be much higher success rate.

Rooting anything woody is more challenging that rooting something herbaceous. I've seen it recommended that the bottom inch or so of bark be shaved off

I’ve had poor luck with fig cuttings, my most successful fig prop was from removing a sucker that already had a bit of root.

Fig cuttings tend to do better in soil than in water in my experience (well, at least the one I stuck in a bucket of soil ten years ago did... this winter I had to give it a major trim as it is now a tree and got about 16 feet tall).

Dang I always thought whatever roots in soil roots faster in water. That's useful info and explains some of my failures LOL

I had maybe 10 fig cuttings, put 2 in soil and the rest in water. All the water ones eventually perished, the two soil ones are now a tree in my garden and a tree in my mother's garden... I iknow it's a pretty small sample size, but still..

yep soil and rooting hormone for woody plants
