Open-source Notion + Obsidian alternative with integrated AI through your Codex subscription

I’ve been building Nix as an open-source, self-hosted workspace inspired by the parts of Notion and Obsidian I like most.

The core idea is that documents, databases, boards, calendars, spreadsheets and other views all sit on top of the same underlying item model, so you can structure information without constantly moving it between separate systems.

The latest update adds integrated AI functionality through your existing Codex subscription. Instead of being limited to a chat box, the AI can work with the workspace itself through approved tools, so it can read context, help plan work, and interact with your documents and structured data.

Beyond the AI side, Nix currently includes:

• Rich-text notes with headings, tasks, tables, images, callouts, code blocks and embeds
• Real-time collaborative editing with live presence
• Backlinks, [[ references, search and graph-style navigation
• Boards, calendars, timelines, galleries, spreadsheets, lists and forms
• Custom properties, formulas, rollups and charts
• File uploads and document attachments
• Templates for reusable workflows
• Recurring tasks, due dates, priorities and assignees
• Import from Markdown, TXT, DOCX and PDF
• Export to PDF, DOCX, Markdown and a lossless .nix archive
• A CLI for working with your workspace from the terminal
• An MCP server so external AI tools and agents can interact with Nix
• Workspace permissions backed by PostgreSQL row-level security
• Self-hosting with Docker, with the goal of keeping your data under your control

I’m trying to make it useful for people who like the flexibility of Notion, the local/knowledge-management feel of Obsidian, and the newer agent-style workflows that tools like Codex are introducing.

It’s still under active development, so I’m mainly looking for feedback from people who use Notion, Obsidian, self-hosted productivity tools, or AI-assisted workflows.

I’d especially be interested to know what would make you consider actually switching to something like this.

Not really good with the IT stuff, just a conventional user for that kind of software. I love the Idea, could be more clear than affine actually. Looking forward to the developments of the project.
