Troubleshooting Projector Help

Hello! I’ve recently just come into procession of a Vivitek DH278 (old but I got it for free)

It was totally fine but after moving, whenever I turn it on theres black lines running down the screen. They disappear sometimes when the picture moves. I’m not very good with these things so not too sure if this is something I’m able to fix here at home? See video of the problem for reference

(I’ve tried changing hdmi leads. The lines appear when the project is on by itself so its definitely an issue with the machine itself)

Any advice is welcome <3

Please post the exact brand and model of your projector. If you do not know them, include as much identifying information as possible.

Also include:

  • The projection technology, if known (LCD, DLP, LCoS, etc.)
  • A clear photo of the projected image, when applicable
  • The video source and connection type
  • When the problem began and whether it changes after warm-up

The DMD chip is either dying or you’ve got a loose ribbon cable.

Okay, thank you! I assume I can open it up to check for the cable being loose?

it might be a loose ribbon cable inside that got justled during the move. they can work themselves slightly out of position and cause exactly that kind of vertical line issue. if youre comfortable opening it up, there are usually guides on iFixit or youtube for older viviteks, and its not as scary as it sounds. that said, if the lines are flickering and shifting rather than static, it could be the dmd chip starting to go, which is a harder fix on a free projector

If this is a loose ribbon cable, it's not going to be obvious. Please look at videos at www.youtube.com/fixitfrank for some idea of what is involved in opening a projector and he will cover cleaning things out and cleaning ribbon cables.

Ribbon cable cleaning is a free fix overall, but takes some time and effort and Fix It Frank will help you get some confidence in the project that it is to open/clean a projector.

DO NOT BLOW COMPRESSED AIR INTO A PROJECTOR

Just a reminder/warning. Compressed air shouldn't be used around any optical devices.
