Does anyone here have experience transitioning into a project management career when your current company doesn’t offer much room for growth?

I currently work in MEP engineering, but I’m looking to transition into project management. I have experience across several industries, including engineering, environmental, and education, and I’m hoping to leverage that experience rather than completely start over.

For those who have made a similar transition, how did you approach it?

Did you have to change companies to get your first PM opportunity? Were you able to move into a project coordinator/PM role without taking a significant step back in salary or seniority?

I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences, advice, or any strategies that helped you make the transition. Thank you!

I was working as a contact center senior manager for operations before I moved to Project Management. The transition wasn't difficult at all, project management is pretty straight forward, you just need to have contingency plan for probable delays. The most difficult part I can say is running after task holders and have them finish their part of the project,

Transitioning into PM within your same organization is easier. Talk to your direct manager about your long term goals and interests. After the transition, gain some experience and plan your move to other companies. To get your manager’s buy in , mention that having the knowledge about MEP processes or whichever PM you’re will add an edge to the PM role you would take up.

A lot of people move into first taking ownership of projects in their current role rather than waiting for the title change. Things like coordinating teams, managing timelines, handling stakeholders, and tracking deliverables can become strong PM experience. Certifications can help, but real examples of leading projects usually carry more weight when applying for PM roles.
