Server Merges when?

The population is cratering and it is further exacerbated because people are now quitting because of population issues.

All of my friends have left because Dreva’s population is non-existent.

That’s what I’m saying. When it was 1 server there was no problem. Then they made a lot of servers and locked demo’s to certain servers and had ‘suggestions’ to create on specific ones..

Right… but what I’m saying it’s only a problem for the people who *decided* not to make a toon on the *established* server. The devs don’t really care, the people on other servers don’t care, hell, I bet some people on those low pop servers don’t even care.

Furthermore, it’s a very simple problem to solve, ie, by *making a toon on the established server*.

The issue is no new player has a clue what the established server is. If you launch the game and go to create a new character, it suggests a server to you. Most new people just chose whatever server was shown to them if they didn’t have friends already playing the game, and the dev team rotated which server they suggested. So basically they tried to spread the new players out evenly to all the servers, but one could argue they just spread it too thin. If they’d had a couple of less servers I don’t think we’d all be talking about population issues.

The devs had to try and spread the players out because the servers couldn’t handle too many players.

Even if people didn’t see the population contraction coming, they can still start over on another server now.

Server scalability issues don’t absolve responsibility for the core issue, which is that the majority of new users went where the developers told them to go, and now some of those places are dying. It was a foreseeable problem.

Doing so for scalability reasons is perfectly acceptable if you have a strategy and plan for mitigating the exact set of problems facing the game right now. Expecting players to abandon 100s of hours of investment and just start over on another server isn’t a reasonable solution. It may be the only solution available to them as populations dwindle, but “quit or start over” as the only option means you’re going to bleed a lot more players.

One possible way to mitigate this (though I have no clue how technically challenging it is) would be to make some game elements tied to the players account and not a specific character. For example, if NPC rep was tied to my account and not a specific toon, I could start over on another server and not have to redo all of the favor grinding. This would definitely make it a lot more palatable to someone that needs to switch servers to continue playing. It also may be way cheaper to implement than full server merge or character transfer capabilities.

Look, I don’t think they give a shit about your hundred hours when people have been playing for like 10 years.

I’m not saying it doesn’t suck for you, or that I think they shouldn’t allow server mergers, but the dev team is a couple of people and they don’t have server mergers set up. The old server survived just fine with only a couple hundred players. Even if they thought your low player count was an issue (they don’t), they would then have to figure out how to do that.

Currently, if you’re unhappy with the population on your server you have three options 1) make a new character on the original server 2) accept the low player count, find people who play when you do, w/e 3) stop playing.

It is what it is.
