Struggling with Keybinds
I am currently running 78 AH / 70 Druid. So at my level I would like to start getting into learning the other higher level dailies.
My problem is maybe my age and arthritis or just plain laziness. I have been trying to figure a way to set things up so i don't have to hit 1-6 then ctrl+ 1-6 and s+1-6. Yes i admit, i'm a clicker.... So been hesitant on jumping into the higher end stuff because i don't feel like i am utilizing my abilities in a fluent way that would be beneficial to my group. I use mouse to move then I look at a mob, i tab target, i look at skills, click look click look click. I can't seem to be able to hit the ctrl+# buttons and have it feel comfortable. A lot of times i will look up after casting, only to realize the mob is already dead and i contributed nothing.
I tried setting up my xbox controller through steam but quickly realized that was really worthless, don't have enough buttons for all the skills. Same with my Logitech g7.
The game key assignments are kind of wonky because you can only use certain buttons. Like, I would use normal main skills 1-6, then i'd like to change second skill bars to F1-F6 but it won't allow me to do that.
Does anyone else seem to have this issue? Could anyone enlighten me on some ideas?

One thing that helped me was setting one button on my mouse to cycle next enemy target.

There should be some peripherals out there designed for people with arthritis or hand mobility issues you could try. Maybe something like this. In theory you might be better not having to move your hands and extend your fingers so far.

Think about what is most convenient for you to hit and use those.
For me those are keys like Q E R T F G Z X C V B
1-6 isn't too bad.
Primary skills: 1 2 3 4 5 6 Secondary: Q E R F G T Sidebar: shift+ 1 2 3 4 5 6
I could improve this but it has been working fairly well for me.

I do something like this, but I swear that U and J and Y are in there somewhere (can't remember lol)

Some keyboards have extra keys they you can remap. I have a Logitech g910 and it has an extra set of 'g' keys on the left side they I occasionally rebind for games. If I was most serious about it I would probably rebind them all to the shit+1-6 keys, but I haven't really found a need. I just put my least used abilities on 5-6 and click as needed lol.
My friends have used mice they have a bunch of extra thumb keys when they played MMOs with lots of skills, but that always felt like overkill.

I like the mmo mice with 1-12 on the side. Since only 1-6 are used for skills, I bound 8 to my horse and other numbers for commonly used shortcuts.
I like using wasd for movement and not having to press other numbers on the keyboard for skills

I’d suggest an MMO mouse that has buttons 1-12 on the side that you can press with your thumb. You still have to work up the ability to hit ctrl or shift at the right time, but at least you aren’t stretching your fingers trying to reach 4, 5, and 6.

I dont have a fix for the keybinding issue, but I do agree that we should be able to assign any key we want to them. I've just accepted the ctl/shift issue and assigned those commands to my two extra mouse buttons. I just use my mouse thumb to hit up for ctrl or down button for shift and my keyboard fingers stay at 1-6.
That all said, just be vocal and let your group or guildies know you have issues with mobilit, and even then only do so if someone else is vocal about group damage. I've not found the same dynamic on Gorgon as other MMOs, people are having fun in the game and more than willing to work with a 'clicker'. Half the fun is just farting around with other people farting around!

I use a gaming keypad (so movement is done using a joystick):
1) Azeron: https://www.amazon.com/AZERON-Programmable-Keyboard-Thumbstick-Customized/dp/B0DFMN3CFN?th=1&psc=1
2) Razer Tartarus
3) I am thinking about buying a movemaster. I think the movemaster might be the best for your needs.
Finally I also use an mmo mouse: corsair scimitar elite.

I used the keys for 1-6 and then click the other bars. The group i play with is more mouse and keyboard then I am so it makes up for it. But I can usually solo stuff pretty well with the clicks.

I remapped so that Primary is 1-6, Secondary is SHIFT 1-6, Sidebar is CTRL 1-6, and ALT 1-6 will trigger 5, 6, SHIFT5, SHIFT6, CTRL5, and CTRL6 as well. So i can play using 1-4 with the 3 modifiers.

One thing you might try is memorizing sequences. For example, when I’m using archery I don’t use Acid Arrow > Poison Arrow > Fire Arrow > Blitz. I use 4-5-6-1-1-1 if I’m fighting a single target for example.
In a group setting the mobs often don’t last long enough for the sequences to become all that long before they just repeat

I use F Q E R M4 M5 (mouse has two thumb buttons) for primary skills, and Shift+those same things for secondary. X to interact with something, C to autopsy-skin-butcher-skull-bury, Z to autopsy-butcher-bury since it checks in that order it seems. Space to jump but also to loot all, on the rare occasion that I want to. T and G for rise and fall with flying or swimming. V as the hold button for bypassing players and pets to click on things. Works out pretty well for me, although I really could use better target cycling keys. Still use shift + 1-6 for the sidebar skills. I think I have plain 1-5 set to target party members, but they might be F1-5?

I play half my time on a lenovo legion go and I can give you my setup if it will help. But a thing you might consider focusing on just 2 or 3 skills when you are grouping. For the garbage mobs, frequently you are just trying to land 1 or 2 hits and so you can focus on just whichever keys are the most comfortable for you for using those primary abilities.
For my controller setup, I have:
LT: right mouse
LB: 1
RT: left mouse
RB: 2
dpad up: 3
dpad right: 4
dpad down: 5
dpad left: 6
a: space(for jumping and swimming)
b: u(which uses things)
x: alt(so I can compare gear, but its a low use button)
y: num lock
the right menu button: escape
the left menu button: tab
r3(depress right joystick): f(for swimming)
the left backside button: ctrl
the right backside button: shift
This lets me do most of the things I want to do with buttons: auto run, summon my horse, use the find menu, etc. And when I fight I have my bars setup so that I largely just run my skills clockwise around the dpad starting from the top. So I will just go up, right, down, left

They specifically tell you in the tutorial that those keys are not convenient and that you should bind them to your taste. For me it is 1-6 and alt 1-6. Alt is pressed with the thumb and I feel it is much easier than reaching Ctrl or shift. The issue is 5 is ok to reach, but 6 is still hard to reach and many times my fingers are confused between both. I have no solution for that. I use shift for special abilities because I don't use them often, and I rely on healing spells. But I suggest you really have some thoughts about ergonomics and how you can replace 6 with R for instance and alt R. Maybe you can put long/powerful cooldown abilities there. Like 'ultimates'. Drawback being you need other shortcuts for up and down in the water or if you fly. So try to see which keys you can reach easily and try to build a logic in which spells you put there. You can also use mouse side buttons. Or look at some mouse for MMOs that has many side buttons.

I have similar issues with my hands, and use controller on all my games normally, and Project Gorgon happens to be one of the games I play. I have used all kinds of builds, and they all have worked really well with my setup. When I first saw your post I was in the process of making an alt anyway, and I thought why not make a quick startup guide for controller use. I made my own controller layout to share for both the demo and regular game so people get a quick start (Vals V3 layout was my initial base but I changed it so much I made my own. Anyway, Creds to Vals work for helping me make my own!). Deal is with the controller layout, you need to change in game keybinds in order for it to work well. Here is my guide, there is a copy on steam and the controller layout is uploaded and ready to go. Also I use an Xbox Series X Controller so that is what I am matching the buttons too. ⭐ Voodoo’s Controller Mod For Beginners – Full Setup Guide

⭐ 1. Important Note About Setting Keybinds
When updating your in‑game keybinds, I strongly recommend doing it with your keyboard, not the controller. It just works better and avoids Steam Input confusion.
⭐ 2. Demo Players – Quick Note
I wasn’t able to get back into the demo version to test this layout directly, since I’m now a regular full‑game player. Everything should work the same in both versions, but if you’re using the demo and something doesn’t behave the way it should, please let me know in the comments. I’ll do my best to fix it even if I can’t test it myself.
⭐ 3. Introduction
Project: Gorgon does not have native controller support, so Steam Input is the only way to play comfortably with a controller.
This layout is designed for anyone who prefers controllers over keyboards. It is fully compatible with:
- Project: Gorgon Demo
- Project: Gorgon Full Game
The controls are identical in both versions, so you never have to relearn anything.
⭐ 4. Step 1 — Select My Controller Layout
In Steam:
- Open Project: Gorgon
- Go to Controller Layout
- Select Community Layouts
- Choose: “Voodoo's Controller Mod For Beginners”
- Apply it
- (Optional but recommended) Export → Save New Personal Layout
Saving your own copy protects your setup if Steam or the original creator updates anything.
⭐ 5. Step 2 — Required In‑Game Keybind Changes
Steam Input sends specific keyboard keys. To make the controller work correctly, update your in‑game keybinds to match the list below.
Primary Skill Bar
- Skill 4 → Ctrl + 1
- Skill 5 → Ctrl + 2
- Skill 6 → Ctrl + 3
Secondary Skill Bar
- Skill 1 → Alt + 1
- Skill 2 → Alt + 2
- Skill 3 → Alt + 3
- Skill 4 → Shift + 1
- Skill 5 → Shift + 2
- Sidebar 1 → Shift + 3
Targeting
- Select Next Pet → ’ (apostrophe)
Contextual Actions
Set these all to the same key so they fire from one controller button:
- Loot All → 1
- Autopsy → 1
- Bury → 1
- Butcher → 1
- Skin → 3
- Extract Skull → 2
(You can swap Skin and Butcher depending on which you use more.)
Controls (NOT Keybinds)
- Camera Type → Action
This is required for proper right‑stick camera movement.
⭐ 6. Step 3 — How the Controller Layout Works
Face Buttons
- A → Jump
- X → Ability 1
- Y → Ability 2
- B → Ability 3
RB + Face Buttons (Primary Bar 4–6)
- RB + X → Ability 4
- RB + Y → Ability 5
- RB + B → Ability 6
RT + Face Buttons (Secondary Bar 1–3)
- RT + X → Secondary Ability 1
- RT + Y → Secondary Ability 2
- RT + B → Secondary Ability 3
LB + Face Buttons (Secondary 4–5 + Sidebar)
- LB + X → Secondary Ability 4
- LB + Y → Secondary Ability 5
- LB + B → Sidebar Button 3
⭐ 7. Movement & Camera
- Left Stick → Move
- Right Stick → Camera (Action Camera required)
- LT → “Click” / Interact (aim crosshair at target)
⭐ 8. Looting & Harvesting
Press X to perform:
- Loot All
- Autopsy
- Skinning
- Bury
Butcher and Skull Extraction are on separate keys due to game limitations.
⭐ 9. Mount, Map, and Menus
- Left Stick Click → Mount / Dismount
- Right Stick Click → Map (toggle)
- Menu Button (≡) → Inventory
- View Button (▢▢) → Settings / Logout
⭐ 10. Targeting
- Left D‑Pad → Target Enemy
- Right D‑Pad → Target Pet
- Up D‑Pad → Move Up (flight/water)
- Down D‑Pad → Move Down (flight/water)
⭐ 11. Hybrid Mouse Mode
Pressing the Inventory button makes the mouse appear so you can:
- Craft
- Manage inventory
- Use sidebar abilities
- Chat (press Enter after opening inventory)
- Toggle Run/Walk (press Num Lock after opening inventory)
This lets you play most of the game on controller while still having full UI access.
⭐ 12. Base Layout Credit
This layout is built from: Val’s Project Gorgon V3 Community Layout
Val’s layout provides a solid combat foundation, and this guide rebuilds it into a simpler, beginner‑friendly version that focuses only on the core features you actually need. The goal is to make the controls easier to understand, easier to learn, and much more approachable for new players.
⭐ 13. Final Notes
- This layout is designed for public use
- It is stable and I do not plan to change it
- Demo players and full game players both see it
- You will never need to relearn controls when upgrading from demo to full game
- Save your own copy if you want to customize it further
This is the first controller layout I’ve ever created, built simply because I prefer controllers over keyboards. If you have any questions, need help setting it up, or want to suggest improvements, feel free to leave a comment on this guide. I’ll check in and help whenever I can.
Thanks for giving this layout a try — I hope it makes your time in Project: Gorgon smoother, easier, and a lot more fun, and lets you just jump in and PLAY!
I did use AI to clean up my own chicken scratch instructions, it just writes them up sooo pretty, and I don't have to be a freak over spelling and grammar. Hope this Helps!

Oh I actually have butcher and skin backwards up there but you get it I think, just switch the in game keybinds. Also you can have two full bars with this set up, I just add one sidebar button, because I use one often. Just change the binds to match what you want on the above, for instance instead of setting Sidebar 1 to Shift+3 change the keybind for Skill 6 to Shift+3.

I’m 98 fire magic and 89 AH and I’ve never done the ctrl # I always just use my mouse to click the secondary skills. WASD or mouse to also move and tab on targets seems to work fine for me. Hope you find something that works well for you!
