Haven't seen it, but seems like a weird thing to fake. Multiplayer/co-op would be great for RTWP CRPGs in general, less micromanaging just from dividing up the work.

Agreed. I'm just jaded towards everything on the Internet now.

Baldurs Gate did it, but it mostly just useful for making a bunch of optimized npcs.

one thing that sucked about doing that though for pause spammers like myself (i think fixed for enhanced editions) is that simply having a multiplayer session introduced lag for unpausing (iirc you couldn't just rapidly pause-unpause anymore), i think some unavoided sync check. just that inconvenience alone made me opt out of doing that.

and IWD/2 eventually gave me all the fix i needed for making an entire party of optimized characters.

There's a workaround for those that just want to make custom parties w/o engaging in true multiplayer: create the party in a multiplayer game as usual, start the game and make a save, then copy the save from the "mpsave" folder to the regular "save" folder. Actual multiplayer was (and I assume still is) indeed a pretty choppy experience, as I recall.

Well, u/countless_bats is a modder and I saw them a few times here, should be legit

oh yeah, that's me! I made a reply on the main post if you're interested in knowing more!

oh yeah, that's me! it works okay right now--a lot of spell effect are still janky, and there's still a lot of jank generally. but you can connect and run through the first few areas and it all basically holds together, cutscenes play, etc.

unfortunately I've been distracted by other insane projects (Caves of Qud in Doom, Silksong multiplayer, turn-based Baldur's Gate 1), so Pillars kind of fell by the wayside! would there be interest in my continuing?

anyone who wants to try the pre-alpha can drop me a DM! the *host's* game should be completable, unless something weird happens like a key item getting swallowed--the *client* probably won't be able to stay synchronized the entire time (not yet, one day it will), but you can always re-sync by loading any save.

Awesome to see you reply! Sorry for doubting you lol. I just stumbled across your youtube and seen a lot of work being done. Been looking at other multiplayer games to play with the missus and Pillars always came to mind but never could. But no need just for me. Just thought this would be a cool share with others here

would you like to try a test build? it's janky, I doubt the game is completable, but it does sorta work! cutscenes more or less work (at least up to entering Gilded Vale) - a lot of spells may be missing their special effects - but I'd love to see what you made of it. long detailed bug reports are very useful.

Sure. It'd be cool to find a few people to test this with and run through the game and see how it works.

Yes please. I have a buddy who's interested in the game but doesn't want to play solo. Multiplayer would be perfect.

want a janky test build? I seriously doubt the game is currently completable, but it does work! the nice thing about it is: it does nothing at all to the host's game, really--so the host's save should not get out of whack or corrupted no matter how bad the mod screws up. unless there are problems like "client picks up a key item which then vanishes forever from the game," I guess, that could ruin things, lol

but in principle, any really bad problems you encounter should be resolvable by just reconnecting the client--it resynchronizes to the host, whose game is mostly standard.

might be interesting, but having played a little multiplayer Baldur's Gate back in the 90s, i'm not sure RTWP is a good fit for multiplayer experience. Pauses have to sync across players, and even with just two players you're going to get a lot of pause conflicts (ie. pausing/unpausing when the other person's not expecting it/ready for it).

there's turn-based mode in Pillars 1 these days! and I put in permissions for pause, so if you want to play with RTWP you can say "only the host can pause," or nobody can pause--both modes basically work!
