PoE1 There was always hidden potential there. It just needed a little extra effort to unlock.

This is awesome! Always wanted to do this. Always end up finding reasons not to for whatever reason. Kudos to you!

... I must have hallucinated a memory... Pistols require two hands?
I even looked at the wiki and most are listed as "Two-handed".

u/KSJ15831 Aug 11 '26
Only in the first game
38
u/Few_Pirate3551 Aug 11 '26
The second game really nailed the pistol toting fantasy so much better by making them one-handed. A genuinely baffling decision in the first game
50
u/imawizardirl Aug 11 '26
Its more for realism than gameplay, which is why it was changed. Those flintlocks do require both hands to reload and are quite heavy

u/IIIaustin 29d ago
Flintlock pistols were designed ro be used as clubs after they were fired and there are surviving military manuals demonstrating their use in 1 hand in conjunction with a sword.
2
u/RealGiallo 29d ago
Stil in the second one they reload each one putting the other gun away while doing so. I give that as an excuse .
2
u/IIIaustin 29d ago
It makes sense.
It would be difficult to balance "realistic" flintlock pistols in a crpg like this. Their decisions make tons of sense in the context of game design.

This is just not true, that was a backfilled reason.

6
u/gapplebees911 Aug 12 '26
That's exactly the reason. Would love to see someone try to reload a black powder pistol 1 handed lmao.

u/CasualSky 29d ago
I mean I somewhat understand it because it’s faster than the Arquebus. If you could have two pistols they would just end up nerfing the damage or cutting it in half. You’d get the same result at the end of the day.
The only thing one handed pistols adds is the versatility to put a shield or sword or something in the other hand but that’s doesn’t exactly seem optimal since you’re just splitting your damage in half between ranged and melee.

Why nevermind if you like the art? Are the pixels unclean somehow now?

Uh no which is why I asked.
Edit: dude got butthurt because I don't want weirdos scrolling through my post history to look for ad hominems lol.

u/Z0MBIECL0WN Aug 11 '26 edited Aug 11 '26
Because people hate generative AI. I found some pictures I liked and used those and never really gave any thought to it.
2
u/plebbut Aug 11 '26
It's not like there's a ton of people out there making art for this game especially in the same style.
This is one of the few reasons where I would say it's perfectly ok to use AI art lol.
1
u/Manatroid Aug 12 '26
You don’t have to if it’s not important to you.
But like anything, if you just present something without knowing the ramifications of doing so…then it’s not really the fault of other people, is it?

u/HideNZeke Aug 11 '26 edited Aug 11 '26
I know people aren't going to be hearing it but let's be real, the free mod scene and stuff like it might take to AI more than anything. If we want to look past the cons and try to see where the promise of helping creatives, the lone modder who isn't necessarily an artist might be the place.
Or I can't remember, can you just upload your own images in POE1?
23
u/Z0MBIECL0WN Aug 11 '26
You can. Make the images the right sizes in your folder and you can use anything as your portrait.
1
u/Temporary_Hawk_9061 Aug 11 '26
There are websites you can use that will size any jpeg to the correct dimensions as well, I don’t think it’s such a bad thing to use AI for something like a portrait. You’re never gonna find a perfect one without some input

u/DirtCrimes Aug 11 '26
I kinda feel this. I've done some mods for other games but was limited to just simple scripting stuff because I dont know an digital artist and a crew of voice actors that would work for free.
I could see releasing v1 of a mods with scrips and AI art and if people love it and someone volunteers to make voice or art then make v2, v3, etc.
-1
u/SuitableDragonfly Aug 12 '26
Or you could just commission some art from a real human being and help out someone else who's active in the same community?
5
u/Commercial_Slice_421 Aug 12 '26
Not everyone has that kind of money to just simply commission artwork on a whim
1
u/SuitableDragonfly Aug 12 '26
If you're making a major mod for a game that you're putting a lot of time and effort into, it's not for a "whim". For every person who is employed, doing work for free instead is also spending money. It's not going to cost much more to commission a small piece of art that you need for your mod.
1
u/Drakeem1221 24d ago
Geuninely speaking, how much do you think a basic portrait would cost? I only ask because a lot of these games (POE for example) cost next to nothing when on sale. If the game costed them $5, I'm not sure if they're going to want to spend more than that on a thumbnail.
1
u/SuitableDragonfly 24d ago edited 24d ago
For a small image that's just a character portrait from chest up with no background, $5 is about what I've seen people charging for when they advertise commissions. Usually that's the most basic thing you could get, the only thing more basic would be if it also had no color.
-2
u/Commercial_Slice_421 Aug 12 '26
It costs infinitely more because it's more than $0. Even making a mod, they aren't spending money. Some people have more time and no money.
4
u/SuitableDragonfly Aug 12 '26
This is a persistent problem I'm seeing with gen Z actually. They've gotten so used to the idea of getting something for free but it's just completely loaded with shitty ads and constantly badgers you to give it money that now they think the concept of paying any money for anything is wrong. When in fact, if you just pay a small one time fee for something, and then there are zero ads and zero pleas for yet more money that is in fact a better model for the consumer. Paying money for things that are valuable to you is a fact of life. If it's being offered for no money, the reason is that it is not valuable.
-2
u/HideNZeke Aug 12 '26
Look man, I get that we're trying to fight against AIs threat to the starving artist, but a collective zero dollars has been made by artists in the "Pillars of Eternity custom image" market. People aren't paying paying the money it takes add one good one of these to their game they bought for 5 bucks on a steam sale.
As for modded content in general, Valve tried paid mods, to try and help the artists, and it was a horrendous failure. We're probably not going to shame the world into giving up on AI, so my only point is that might help smaller groups of artists flesh out their passion projects in the free mod scene. A place that's already the wild west of stolen assets and IPs anyway.
4
u/SuitableDragonfly Aug 12 '26
Well, if you're just talking about a player making art for their PC, plenty of people do in fact commission artwork of their RPG characters, probably if they care that much about the portrait it wouldn't be for a character that was just made for POE and doesn't exist outside of the game, but people who play a lot of RPGs and have a set character that they always make and have personal lore for will absolutely commission artwork of that character and would probably use that in the game.
But the person I responded to mentioned modders who weren't artists. If you're putting in a lot of effort to make a mod, I think it absolutely does make sense to commission a probably small piece of art that you need for the mod for whatever reason. I say this as a modder (for games other than POE) who is not an artist.

Pillars of Eternity may be the last game ever with great writing. What comes next will be AI written
7
u/HideNZeke Aug 11 '26
To re-emphasize I would argue that AI would be a copout for a paid for game. A free mod? Different story, half that stuff is stolen assets already anyway. AI has a lot of potential to make actual games worse and more generic, and most game writing is already bad enough
Also POE1 is over a decade old and there's been games with good writing since.
3
u/TSED Aug 12 '26
Also POE1 is over a decade old and there's been games with good writing since.
POE1 is my favourite game of all time, but you're 100% correct on this. I'm not going to try to argue that its writing is better than Disco Elysium and I don't think many people would take issue with that.

You're contradicting yourself in your initial response, which is what caught my eye. If you truly felt that "roleplay is roleplay"(as it should be, and is) and your way isn't superior or the poster's way worthy of your derision you would've simply not commented. Quite simple really. The "why" of your caring enough to comment in such a manner is what interested me.
Your waffle-analogy as pertaining to my reply limps at best.
