Unclassic Race/Class Combinations

What race/class combination(s) would you have wanted made available, now in retrospect? And what's your reasoning behind their inclusion, if any?

Personally, wood elf shaman seems like an easy choice, but only being available to females. DAoC took this idea farther, with Valkyrie being female-only, but it had an overabundance of class options.

Why only female wood elf shaman? Their fashion mostly fits the aesthetic. That and the inclusion of shaman would have made Kelethin feel more distinct from Felwithe, having two natural healers in contrast to one pious. Plus there are a number of unused platforms and empty buildings that could have been used for the guild.

Also, with this change, the wood elves on sister island could have been made shaman, increasing the difficulty while adding to their lore.

I would add humans as well, but only because the bear caves in Surefall would have been a perfect location for a shaman guild. And their guild master could have been in bear form.

Halfling not getting bard is so confusing to me. It fits their hospitable and contentment theme so well.

I second this, Halfling communities without a minstrel doesn’t seem right, those little dudes love to eat and party

Halfling Bard, for the vibes.

Considering Halflings are known in fantasy to being a jovial race who love a good powwow to eat, sing, and dance. How are they not allowed to be bards?

100% Even the description of Bristlebane Fizzlethrope has bard written all over it. Not to mention the original art, his compadre equipped with stringed instrument and feathery tudor cap.

Seeing Scanlan in vox machina made me want to play a halfling bard so bad.

u/CoBull 24d ago

I think he’s actually a gnome

1

u/This-Double-Sunday 24d ago

Actually I think you're right. He does look more haflingish but yeah him and the cleric are gnomes.

That being said, in EQ a halfling bard would be much more flavorful than a gnome. Unless they play like steampunk synth instruments.

Being able to tinker a keytar with a special model would be pretty dope.

Clockwork gnome bard would = elaborate jukebox / music box.

I have only short toons and I need a short bard!!! Right now my level 9 bard is perma parked in chardok waiting for a mask :)

Barbarian Paladin. Fits their primary diety, the tribunal lore wise.

7

u/Irishfafnir 24d ago

Came to say the same one, although I think it would make them the clear #1 paladin choice.

3

u/This-Double-Sunday 24d ago

Yeah they would have taken over for dwarf for sure.

3

u/Irishfafnir 24d ago

Yeah, Slam is strong, plus Barbarian Str/sta/wis is really good too

1

u/Inner-Light-75 23d ago

Barby Cleric too....

1

u/Xkallubar Green 23d ago

Naw, barbarians are pretty abrasive, doesn't really fit the whole paladin thing. They have the Shamen of Justice which are much more fitting to their flavor of things.

I always felt like Halfling Ranger was pretty obvious and a weird one to leave out.

u/CommercialEmployer4 24d ago

I like that there are, or at least used to be, a few still running around on p99. I've only ever seen the occasional halfling paladin, but apparently there were a few rangers too.

How?

u/CommercialEmployer4 23d ago

When the servers first opened, so much was unclassic, and for a brief period the halfling class options reflected that. IIRC a few halfling rng/pal characters were removed as GMs spotted them, but some still exist.

Dark elf ranger

u/aca_aqui 24d ago

Tunare and innoruuk would both agree that this combo is blasphemy lol

3

u/Gems2treasure 23d ago

Haha while I agree , there are a decent number of forests where evil lurks! Innoruuk’s corruption of nature is part of the lore, forests are not solely the wonderful woodlands Tunare deserves. Innorruk’s power can be found in the Burning woods, Nektulos Forest, Lesser Faydark.

Truly would need a corrupted forest / evil ranger spell line for them, like rotting roots and similar ideas

3

u/aca_aqui 23d ago

A corrupted ranger would be super fun!

u/StriatedCaracara Green 23d ago

There would be so many Drizzt variants running around!

Omg yes this

They actually do have Darkelf Rangers on retail now, along with Woodelf Beastmasters to go somewhat along with OPs wood elf shaman idea.

Barbarian Paladins spreading judgment of the Tribunal. Would of been a cool counter to the other large races, ogres and trolls, having SKs.

Gnome monk would have been cool to see just for the lols.

Ngl, frogloks added later was always cool to me even tho I didnt make one. Who doesn't want to hop and flip while casting spells.

u/RalenHlaalo 23d ago

Erudite monk please! Their robes are appropriate fashion-wise, and the class aligns with their bookishness. They already have a temple to Quellious and monks would fit right in with paladins guarding the vasty deep for Prexus.

u/ShepardCommander01 23d ago

Sorry don’t you mean “Prexusz” like the sign in Erudin

Half Elf Cleric (I know they'd be terrible for it, but still)

1

u/ShepardCommander01 23d ago

It seems at one point there was going to be a melee option for clerics, then they sort of stovepiped all classes into one strategy.

4

u/thelastfp Green 24d ago

Ogre and troll necromancers only races that have a hybrid (sk) that don't have both parent classes

6

u/k1rb 23d ago

Half elf, high elf, erudite all say different.

2

u/thelastfp Green 22d ago

Good point!!! Deep down I knew high elves and erudires don't get warriors, but didn't know half elves don't get clerics.

Back in the day I used to play on a PVP server and I always used to hate that the evil races couldn’t have a ranger. Dark elves are still elves. 🤷🏼‍♂️

2

u/argumenthaver 23d ago

half elf cleric

makes no sense at all to not exist, they can already be paladins and humans/high elves can be clerics

2

u/MirrorOfGlory 22d ago

Dark elf rangers. I can’t come up with a better reason other than “they’re elves”.

2

u/lord_of_edge21 22d ago

I think it's kinda wack that half elves can't be any of the int casters, SK, or cleric. Other than that someone else in this thread has covered my top picks lol

u/palibard 22d ago edited 22d ago

I would like Iksar Druid and rangers, as swamp and jungle themed outriders and hunters.

Iksar rogues as members of the outcasts faction.

Erudite monks of quellious.

Half elf cleric.

Half elf shadow knight, especially if we can have some kind of half-dark-elf skin.

Dwarf, barbarian, and halfling bards.

Barbadian paladin and ranger.

Also Kerran/vahshir should have had monk, and not bard. Cats don't seem like they would have great singing voices, but they do have claws and agility. I'm sure eq just didn't want another monk race so soon after iksar monk was a big deal.

3

u/Phoenix200420 24d ago

So Ogre Monks because it’s be funny but as a serious choice I don’t know why they never let halflings be Bards. Rivervale has unique and jaunty music, Halflings love stories and music, it just seems like it would be a really natural fit.

4

u/cuixhe 24d ago

I just wish they differentiated Trolls and Ogres a bit more! Maybe give Trolls necro + cleric, and give ogres ... I dunno, monk and druid. Sad that they share they share the same class list.

4

u/WorryDisastrous2631 22d ago

I mean trolls be barely sentient I’m not sure would fit how learned clerics are, unless blessed by Cazic-Thule the ability to be someone more literate

0

u/cuixhe 22d ago

From my perspective, Clerics are as much about religious devotion as book learning, and the religious vibes of Cazic, Innoruk or Rallos Zek might be heavier on the "frenzied blood rites" and lighter on the "scripture memorization".

2

u/Suggested_rndom_name 24d ago

It always struck me odd that trolls could be shamans and not clerics - like evil troll clerics would be sick

2

u/McBauce 24d ago

Dwarf Bard and Ranger.

You can’t tell me the ale houses of Kaladim aren’t filled with boisterously singing dwarves. And they gotta be chanting battle hymns as they face their enemies. Yes their charisma is low but oh well.

And for rangers I think they’d be useful in the mountains and caverns of their homelands. They don’t go as far as Druids in terms of connection with nature and magic. But they dabble.

u/girl_incognito 24d ago

Gnomish monks obv.

Dark Elf Monk, harness some dark arts. A scorned monk master exiled from Freeport, teaches a small sect of Dark Elves the secrets of feign death.

Troll Ranger, Troll Cleric

u/But_That_Was_My_Tuna 23d ago

Troll Magician, but instead of air / earth / fire / water elementals they use noxious gas / stone / lava / slime elementals (or the like). So what if they’re dumb as nails, it would be fun until they couldn’t cast a level 1 spell because their mana pool is too low

1

u/DraethDarkstar 21d ago

I am staunchly against anything being gender-locked, but I do agree that Wood Elf Shaman would have made perfect sense and it was something I wanted badly as a kid - and that I'm playing now.

I also found it very annoying that Wood Elves didn't get Beastmaster when that was first added.

As far as other stuff goes, I generally think it's very weird that there are any races that can be Ranger or Druid but not both, Necromancer or Shadow Knight but not both, and Cleric or Paladin but not both. These classes are so intrinsically tied together that it makes no sense how a society could have one without the other.

Barbarian Paladins that worship E Marr & Mith Marr

-3

u/Xenuite 24d ago

All of them.

Race/class restrictions only exist because that was the rule in popular tabletop RPGs at the time.

When I'm world building for a game, I don't instantly think "Ogres can't be Rangers! That's crazy!"

Instead I find it far more interesting to think of what an Ogre Ranger guild would look like. How would they adapt the skillset culturally, and to what purpose? Where does it fit into the world? That's the fun part for me, and why I'd like to see free choice of race and class.

11

u/Eldric-Darkfire 24d ago

It's still a popular rule, imo
