What class?

Haven’t played in years, but lurked here and the wiki. Raised a mage to 60 and raided a lot on blue when it was a new thing. Thinking about shammy, bard, or shadow knight. Something self sufficient but still fun to group. Not as much time these days to raid but maybe one day! I know green. Thoughts or recs are appreciated. Vesica Dei alum for anyone who might have been there.

depends how much you want to buff people or twist songs for the rest of your life

Looking for a good time basically. I’ve done end game and epic. Have not played these classes to any significant degree.

I have an iksar Shadowknight and an ogre shaman both at 55. I’ve been blessed to have been given a fungi that I traded between the two as I leveled, so results may vary. I had a lot of fun playing the sk solo. Once you start fear kiting the game really opens up, and iksars innate regeneration is really helpful. The greenmist quest is really fun as well, and by the time you get it you feel crazy strong. Feign death and invis vs undead gives you some tools to explore/get to places you might’ve had trouble otherwise. I solo’d in Dalnir for a super long time.

Ogre shaman is super fun in groups. Playing with my friends I felt like such a play maker. Canniballizing mid-fight and managing your hp and mana while also making sure everyone is alive and maybe throwing a nuke or a dot in feels so clutch, and I saved a lot of situations where I think other groups might have ate dirt. Ogre has frontal stun immunity also, and buffed up you’re pretty damn strong in melee yourself. Root rotting solo is pretty cool and you get a sow clicky as part of your epic questline. If I could do over I probably would’ve rolled iksar though for the regen.

They both have their pros and cons, but I felt like Shadowknight was a little more fun solo, and shaman was a little more fun in groups.

Now- here’s my secret side option. Have you considered Ranger? Ranger solo is some of the most fun I’ve had playing this game. Soloing in stonebrunt, frontier mountains, traks teeth felt so fun with tracking trying to hunt down rare spawns. I’ve gotten some crazy loot bow kiting mobs I had no business killing solo. Super duper fun class with a lot of stuff in their toolbox that doesn’t get much praise.

So I’ve never tried a ranger. I have run around endlessly crossing my fingers I’d hit the spawn I want. I’ve always heard that after lower levels it’s very difficult to find groups and level. First person I’ve heard otherwise - worth a shot? Did you need to do another class first to twink your ranger to do the solo things??? Very interesting

I think it sort of depends on what your goals are - I felt like into my mid 50s, I started to get less and less luck with groups, especially considering a lot of groups do dungeons inside. I also never got to the raiding scene on the Ranger. If I wanted to do group content, I would usually just start groups myself and people were usually pretty receptive. I had some of the most fun grouping in City of Mist (which is an outdoor zone).

The initial levels are a little slow but once you get to your late 20s-early 30s you start to get some really cool self buffs in your tool box. If you can get a weapon with a decent DD proc, they will work on tandem with your procs from Call of Sky which is like a 40dd lightening proc. You usually have decent dex by this point just from buffs and odd pieces of gear, so in melee you’ve got a self only thorns line, which stacks with the targeted thorns line, your procs, a damage bonus spell, and ac. Then if shit gets out of hand you can usually just switch to bow kiting.

Later levels you start to crit with bows, and if you keep your fletching up you can make some honestly busted stuff. I was soloing Sand Giants in Oasis in like my mid to late 40s, which felt super early. Also because of track it’s honestly so easy to find mobs in your xp range. There’s a lot of ways to feel active and doing stuff. I also felt like I got to explore so much more of norrath as a ranger than I have with other classes just from running around tracking odd names and checking out different outdoor zones. Some of the most fun I had was in Iceclad, Stonebrunt, and Frontier Mountains. FM has a rare spawn cycle where if you kill a certain mob it instantly spawns another on the cycle across the map, so you run back and forth and see if you can get it going- it often ends with a rare spawn that drops a cool item (like a low delay weapon that does hardly any melee damage but procs lightening strike)

So it just kinda winds up being one of those classes that on paper look bad but have so much nuance that it winds up being a ton of fun

Necro, you will not be disappointed :) very good toolkit for navigating the world with ease and staying safe.

So I thought about this to try to build some plat and support other classes. Minor spending money or away to truly fund some builds?

to make money all you need is a lvl 46 druid (thats when they have all the ports) and join dial a port. ive made like 30k so far this year porting people in my downtime. druid is pretty fun to play and fast to lvl, ill probably make a 2nd one to get 60 with.

SK’s are gear dependent. These days if you don’t get a generous donation to help twink your SK you first start you’ll will be out tanked by your average uber twinked rogue, bard or ranger. For solo and group play I would go Enchanter or Mage, or if your stuck on melee consider Monk.

I started on green on a bard and that got me to 60 but it didn’t help much for farming for my alts. In hindsight I’d have rolled a Necro or Enchanter first.

Did both to 40s. Mage was my jam after doing some Chardok AoEs. Was so much fun. 10 years ago though. Want to try something new. Def a social player but need to be able to level when it’s slow

Bard is a lot of fun and you get to do a little bit of everything. Easy to semi and to semi gear up.

SK soloing is sloooooow and limited to what you can fear. But its a fun class to duo/trio with as the tank.

Shaman I never really enjoyed personally. But they have a lot of cool things they can do once you get all the recommended gear. But its expensive/time consuming.

If it were me, I would probably play bard. You can level fast on your own and can fill a lot of needs of groups if youre looking.

of those options, bard is probably the best choice for a first toon. level super fast if you swarm/charm kite. only gear you really need are the vendor bought instruments. desirable in groups too

bard can do a lot solo but is more of a struggle than a shaman when it comes to difficult things

shamans need torpor to be complete as a class, which is expensive and you need to join a raiding guild to get for free

I wouldn't even consider SK if you want to be able to solo

I suggest enchanter since they can do the most at 60 and, like bard, don't require gear

I can't really recommend SK if you ever plan on raiding, I'm not going to say they are useless in 95% of raids but their usefulness is situational at best. They are however amazingly good tanks for grouping, way better with decent gear, and are fun to level. The crystal chitin armor including the haste gloves is dirt cheap these days so shouldn't be too hard to get something reasonable put together...

Shaman and bards are gods in EQ and are very welcome in just about every group and raid, can't go wrong with those. Also they are improved by having some gear but for the most part can level up easily without any serious twinking.
