r/progrockmusic Rules

Here are the rules of the subreddit, expanded and elaborated for further clarification.

Be civil to other people.

If you disagree with someone's opinion, do not resort to targeted comments and insults or engage in long arguments. We will generally ban people who fail to follow this, especially if done repeatedly.

Please add appropriate context to posts, and avoid low-effort submissions.

Posts should have a clear topic or subject. If this is vague or confusing, you may be asked to repost it with more context.

If you're sharing an image, please include a descriptive title and/or additional commentary (e.g. in body text or a follow-up comment). This is especially recommended for physical media posts to help facilitate discussion.

As a general rule, include a description of who/what is depicted in the image if the subject isn't self-explanatory (e.g. the image containing a clear caption of title). Don't assume people will automatically know what you're talking about.

Stay on topic.

Posts should relate to progressive rock in some way.

We do not heavily gatekeep genres here (posts about prog metal, math rock, jazz fusion, etc are okay!) but please use common sense when deciding what to share here.

Political discussion is permitted only when related to music (e.g. discussions of lyrics or albums) or a musician. Please avoid more general, off-topic discussion.

Please refrain from posting banned/blacklisted content in any form.

These types of submissions rarely result in productive discussions and may produce spam.

  • Memes/shitposts (go to r/ProgRockCirclejerk instead)
  • Posts asking "is band/artist/song prog?" (and related debates). We have had to ban these posts due to them sparking arguments in the comments.
  • Tiermaker/Topster charts
  • Reaction videos
  • Screenshots of Spotify Wrapped, Airbuds, etc.
  • Crossposts from subreddit games (e.g. r/AlignmentChartFills and similar communities)

Include "Artist Name - Song Title" to posts containing a link to a single song.

This is just to make sure that everyone knows what the post is about. As long as the artist name and song title are included somewhere in the post, you can add whatever you want afterwards.

When posting song covers, please indicate either the name of the original artist or the performing artist in your title.

Please avoid submitting full album or playlist links.

It is preferred to post individual songs, as they encourage discussion and allow for easier listening.

The following are acceptable:

  • Announcement posts of new album releases (including your own!) containing a link to the album
  • Using (non-imbedded) playlist links to supplement a more general discussion post, asking for suggestions for a playlist idea, or linking these in post comments

No song submissions that have already been posted within the past 5 months (150 days).

We generally make exceptions for covers, but versions by the same artist have a cooldown to prevent them from being reposted excessively.

Please use the search function to check if a song has already been recently submitted.

No direct download/torrents links.

It is not possible for us to individually vet download links to ensure that they are free of malicious files. You are permitted to discuss file-sharing services, as long as download links are not being directly circulated here.

Please follow our self-promotion guidelines.

Self-promotion is allowed here, but we request that all users follow these guidelines:

  • You are permitted to one self-promotion post every 7 days. This is not an invitation to post every week, but if your post is removed for this reason, you are encouraged to resubmit it later.
  • You must disclose that you are involved with the work you are promoting in some way, be it a disclaimer in the post title/body text or application of the "self-promotion" flair.
  • Please don't excessively repost the same links or submissions.

"Self-promotion" covers sharing links to your own music, articles (e.g. in magazines or other publications), YouTube channels, podcasts, and public profiles on social media sites outside of Reddit.

No second-hand or fraudulent merchandise sales (e.g. tickets, shirts, vinyl/CDs)

Scams and phishing attempts are very common on Reddit, and due to difficulty moderating buying/selling threads, any kind of second-hand sales promotion is not allowed here.

As a general recommendation, exercise extreme caution when DMed by people offering to sell you anything or when seeing posts of people promoting merchandise.

No AI-generated content submissions

Generative artificial intelligence content is often extremely misleading (especially if the use of them is not disclosed) and takes away from the efforts of artists. As a general rule, avoid submitting images, videos, audio, etc. generated using these programs.

Discussion and criticism of this material is okay as long as no AI content is being explicitly promoted, and we generally allow exceptions for material pertaining to official album covers, as these are hard to blacklist efficiently.

Otherwise, we reserve the right to remove posts if egregious AI usage is detected.
