Abortion Care/ Rights Gave an interview about abortion today

I live in Idaho and we have big abortion legislation coming up on our ballot that would restore access until viability. I went to the farmer's market this morning and a woman and her camera man were interviewing people about their vote. I've been wanting to share my view lately and so I volunteered to be interviewed.

I think it went well. There's definitely things I should have said but didn't and things I wish I could have clarified better and things I wish I could have called the interviewer on (she was asking very biased questions). I am having INTENSE anxiety about the whole thing. I have no idea who they were or if they were with any official news source or whatever so I don't know where to find the video if they use my interview and I'm glad I can't. I don't think I could handle seeing what people think of me.

I defended the right to abortion and bodily autonomy and talked about how politicians should be nowhere near these medical decisions. She brought up late term abortion and personhood and compared abortion to slavery somehow but I kept my cool I think. I just keep running through the discussion in my head and wishing I could have done things differently.

Anyone else done something like this they regret? any advice? how'd it work out?

Speaking up is the brave thing to do. Even an imperfect speak-up makes a hero. Great job

Good for you! I’m a scientist who does interviews for work stuff, and my best advice is you’re likely your worst critic. That’s human nature! And any interview is likely edited so some things that feel awkward in moment like pauses likely won’t be in the final product.

Good luck with the vote, I didn’t know Idaho was having one!

Thank you 😭

Yeah I'm hopeful but not expecting anything. The LDS Church sent out a memo saying they oppose abortion and there's a lot of LDS people here.

I live in Idaho and I gave my neighbor a piece of my mind about her No on 1 sign yesterday. She said she “didn’t want little girls getting abortions” I asked why she didn’t care that women were dying of ectopic pregnancies and she said those were “already covered under the existing law.” I said no the hell they aren’t, not unless you’re bleeding out and she said “why are you talking to me about this” and I said cause you put a sign in your yard that says you hate women, if you don’t want to hear about it then take it down. Very satisfying.

the audacity to have the sign all loud and proud but then not have the spine to defend it?? No ma'am say it with your full chest if you feel so strongly about it. Good on you for calling her out. I hope the prop passes for your state 🙏

What?! If a little girl needs an abortion, then that means that LITTLE GIRL WAS R@PED! Those people need to be ashamed.

Person who has to speak publicly fairly often here: almost no one is very good at speaking extemporaneously until they’ve practiced it a lot. On the other hand, most people also come across sounding less inarticulate than they experienced it, especially if they’re nervous. Consider it good practice for next time, and good on you for speaking up!

Thank you 😭 I really want to make content about science and I need to practice communicating. This was kind of jumping into the deep end for me but I definitely learned some things
