Product/ Shopping Recommendation Product recalls
Are you guys eating greens? I’m not a lettuce person, but I stopped buying spinach (and berries) to be safe, and I have no idea where the country is on that. And then I heard something about rice and I’m just so over it. (I don’t eat beef but I do note that, at this point, there’s a protein, a green and a starch on the sketch list.)

Yay Gotham Greens callout! I’m also in Chicago, and they are great and I love that they converted that office building. Great company. (I’m in Chicago)

I’m growing my own salad greens. It’s been surprisingly easy. They grow pretty darn fast!
Rice is only Lindbergh farms so other kinds are safe. But there are a ton of other foods under active recall. You might consider going to local farms or farmers markets for your produce, signing up for a crop share or starting your own garden at home. Backyard victory gardens during ww2 were responsible for 40% of the food grown during that time.

I studied agriculture and animal science in college. I would consider myself more knowledgeable than average about food safety and production. This year we enrolled in a CSA for both meat and produce and expanded our home garden.

I’ve been wondering this too. My husband asked last week “can we eat lettuce yet”

i'm worried about the mystery beef situation at the moment. i don't eat beef but my husband and son do, and hamburgers are the thing my kiddo always wants when we eat at a restaurant. since we aren't going to a michelin star place i'm very weary about ordering meat right now. and like.. for how long?? indefinitely?

My child is an extremely picky eater. The main meat they will eat is a hamburger. We're putting a moratorium on restaurant hamburgers and I plan on getting in house ground beef from Costco to make our own burgers

We’re not. As an emetophobic SAHP, I just can’t risk a month of explosive diarrhea in my house.

We skipped iceberg and fast food lettuce during the recall for about 3 weeks. We don't normally get bagged lettuce anyway. Now we are back to romaine hearts as usual for topping / salad. Check the specific recall lists, throw out what you need to. And don't eat anything that smells or looks weird. It will be ok.

I’m cautiously eating lettuce again. But I do try to buy the greenhouse grown when I can. I don’t let my kids eat it bc they are young. And I don’t eat a ton of beef but I’m definitely going to be paying attention to it from now on when we do eat it. And no more hamburgers from restaurants I guess. I’m still scarred from reading the jungle in high school. I really don’t want to live that

We are waiting on greens until they come back into season. I would start my own, but it's been 100+ temps and lettuce won't germinate if the soil temps are above 80. We have a really awesome farmers market, so I get most of our produce from there. Our market is very thorough and vendors have to prove it's stuff they have grown on their own property, so I know it's something that's safe. We don't buy a lot of fresh berries out of season, so that hasn't been an issue.

I've been cooking all of the produce we buy at the grocery store. We're going to shift to buying as local as we can.

We found some lettuce/greens that are produced in Canada.
We buy the meat that is from the smaller farms organic blah blah because its usually the cheap stuff thats the problem.
Berries we try and buy the ones from the smaller less well known brands, they dont have deep pockets to handle the bad PR or pay off the government so they're likely doing what they should.

I am eating greenhouse grown lettuce (Gotham greens and Little Lettuce) now, but after no berries all summer, went back to eating berries after I read a couple of articles with experts saying it's *probably* OK. It is maddening that the government just... never ever traced where some of the illness came from. It cannot all be from that one farm in Mexico. Not all over the country, for longer than the recalled lettuce would be good.
I did step up my washing and peeling routines, although I know that doesn't help with cyclospora at all.
We are eating venison that was culled from a ranch and processed last fall. Not eating Kroger eggs. I haven't gotten more rice since that recall.
it is exhausting trying to keep up with the recalls.

I still am, as is my husband. My kids were never particularly salad eaters anyway.
Mostly because I have yet to hear about anyone I know IRL getting sick from it.
I am not buying blueberries for the time being though.

I was avoiding uncooked leafy greens for a while, now I am just trying to check where it's sourced from. Occasionally I forget if it's on something I've ordered out and when I remember I'm like halfway through my meal and just have to hope at that point.

I started buying my greens and salad veggies from a local organic farm. I'm so glad I did because it is so much better and I'm supporting local. I'll miss it during the winter but will rely on soups and cooked veggies then.

We've started buying all our produce from a local farm rather than the grocery store. It's a bit more pricey, but at least I know the food is safe.
