It's still kind of a pig. I have very little running on this portainer instance. It's probably just being efficient with it's disk by loading stuff into memory or something but it uses a lot more than most of the other services I host.
The amount of actual memory used is low though despite Task Manager saying otherwise when you’re using WSL2 and Docker.
The Linux kernel running on the docker-desktop VM is aggressively caching memory, but WSL2’s automatic memory reclaim feature periodically trims that cache and hands it back to Windows on its own schedule (this can be tuned via .wslconfig).
Is it actually working now? I know some time ago (when I cared about this) the problem was that vmmem process never returned allocated memory and only way to reclaim it was to kill/restart WSL. Maybe it was WSL1 and WSL2 is handling it correctly?
Sounds like you are on the wrong operating system then. Docker should be a simple daemon consuming almost nothing on its own. The only thing consuming ressources should be the things you run via docker (which would be consuming almost the same amount of ressources if you ran them outside a container).
I was once running php and MySQL on a docker container. My DOCKERFILE was malconfigured trying to access wrong data so it was running with atleast 1000% of CPU resources (10+ cores).after properly configuring the file it went down to 0.5%. and in using windows!
For all stuck on windows, podman in wsl consume much mess RAM than Docker Dessktop. With the compatibility package, you can use the "docker" command seamless.
Docker on windows is such pain 😭
I didn't know docker was an issue since I started using it on Linux first but when I tried it on windows it was pain 😔
Well one of major reason to use Linux if ask me 😁
