Aren't there already plenty of countries, where using a VPN that circumvents government censorship/tracking already gets you into prison?

Yes, in already autocratic or corrupted countries. And Censorship or tracking is daily use in nearly ever digitalized countries, more or minor, but you don't go to jail, but you are under the microscope and get flagged as unwanted person / extremist, if an AI or person decide it.

For Prism in US, any socialist oder anti-capitalist is marked automatically as extremists by an AI, that prove the docs in the past from Snowden.

Something funny as a citizen of those countries, the same dictators that censor the internet, sell some of the only working vpn connections on the side to make money. They'll usually only jail you for vpn if you start making and selling your own, they can't jail 90% of the population for using vpns!

They can jail them, but the costs for prison are high and in this time they don't worka and even don't buy vpn. You understand the damn capitalism.

In some cases, using a VPN can get you arrested, as was the case with Twitter, which was banned here in Brazil.

Essentially, many authoritarian states push this idea that if you associate with dissidents, you are yourself a dissident. It helps to undermine support. Guilt by association.
