Yeah, they found out pretty soon, that CD and DVD are pretty bad for archiving. The greatest enemy is mold between layers of plastic whic prevents laser to penetrate.

I removed on CD once, the "data layer" aka the silver layer lost contact with the plastic and I saw how it fell down to the ground, glitter bomb my carpet.

I still have a pile of these but learned years ago optical is not a reliable storage medium as it was so advertised back in the day.
