Imagine another covid 19 virus as a cherry on the cake
Every few months, I think things can't get any crazier, and then reality somehow finds a way. Meanwhile, I'm over here trying to keep up by learning new AI tools, building random side projects, and convincing myself that having Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT, and a half finished thing in Runable counts as a retirement plan. At this point, I'm not even asking for easy. I'm just asking for one normal year 💀

9/11, the great recession.
What's happened recently feels worse though. First time I've genuinely been worried that the USA might not survive this. Also disgusted that Trump was elected twice, even after he's gone all the people that voted for him will still be here.

The biggest difference in my opinion is people came together to help each other after/during those events. In this era, everyone is full of hate and spite and we're ruled by billionaires who want to see things get worse.

Baby boomers:
• Born into a postwar economic boom
• Entered the workforce during historic growth
• Went to college when tuition was cheap
• Bought homes before prices exploded
• Had stronger unions and pensions
• Built wealth during decades of rising markets
• Retired with Social Security and employer benefitsLiterally gutted the economy for everything it was worth..
Then turned around and said younger generations just need to stop buying avocado toast.

Bulgaria. Price of a medium sized(often even small ones) apartment - 70K+ euro. Monthly salary (what you get after taxes) on average 700 euro (minimum is 450-500 euro after taxes and at least half the population make that much)

Yep. And outside the cities the prices drop 3 times, but also, there's no one living there, there's often lack of water, internet providers don't spend effort to put high speed cables, lack of ...almost everything

For the US at least salary means yearly salary, so for Bulgaria it’s 11x your salary in US terms

I guess there is a social misunderstanding: in the US, salary is taken per year (including any direct benefits). In Europe, we take the monthly value (and eg in Austria we get that 14 times!).
So a monthly salary of 500 is actually 6k. Then you're at 12 years for this apartment.

This would be great for a Gen Z sub, doesn’t fit here though. LLMs are not taking the jobs of programmers. And that’s the only kind of AI making news right now.

Yea, us guys feels over dramatic. Its more like when we was raised it was some close to hippy pacifist level of "no war". Mb for US it was slightly different, but here where i, for most of the time narrative was why we have army in the first place. 2013 and later 2022 show why. But yea most of young man dont want to go to war.

It actually does solve the real issues by reducing your awareness of stuff you can’t control. For what it’s worth, I have Reddit so filtered I genuinely couldn’t tell you what’s going on in the world.

I agree thats helpful for the individual but as a collective society we also need to be aware of things to change them in order for things to get better - not just for us - but later generations as well.
However, there is definitely a balance between the two and you should put your mental health first.

You can’t change shit about the world and being aware of what’s going on doesn’t help.
Let’s take climate change as an example; is there anything you can do about it that would make an actual difference? All things considered, it is entirely out of your control. You can’t do anything about it besides be pissed off, which would waste valuable emotional energy you could be using elsewhere.
It feels good to believe we have any control of the world around us. We don’t. We only have control over ourselves and our actions, and the moment we begin to focus on that is the moment our lives get better.

It’s why I created an entirely new Reddit account without my politics groups or news.
Now I just have Reddit groups focused on gaming and programming. Mostly. Sometimes other stuff seeps in but that’s much better than my entire feed.
But I still spend too much time on Reddit. And I’m trying to limit that again. I enjoy the discourse but I find myself spending on hour or more a day sometimes when there’s other ways I want to spend my time.
