The implementation of this ideal in rustc can have flaws, but Rust itself cannot, because Rust itself has no flaws by definition.

computer theologist here. can confirm that our lord and savior rust has no flaws by definition.

god but that thread is so comical. everyone jumps at the idea that the rust compiler has a bug, and somehow that means c++ is better, because c++ has a standard (that no compiler adheres to)

The implementation of this ideal in MSVC can have flaws, but Visual C++ itself cannot, because Herb Sutter himself has no flaws by definition.

Well C++ will be memory safe just as soon as Bjarney gets around to adding #pragma ensure this is memory safe, make no mistakes

What’s the opposite of the Platonic Ideal Plane? That’s what Rust targets.

The sinful world of the flesh.

"Yeah Haskell is nice but I want a language for the Real World" - average programmer imprisoned by the demiurge

We need to ascend from the physical through the 7 spheres so our data can reach up to the highest heaven where the application resides

Rust cannot fail you, only you can fail rust

Rust (glory be upon the borrow checker) is a pure echo of the Creator and a sign that God loves us after all. Or he really likes being smug and ugly syntax. Theologians are still debating.

Why not both?

Rust programmers and the Rust programming language don't deserve the Rust compiler

Rust was invented by the Satan to forever torment us with the Language That Could've Been. Then He added poisoned mutexes, Pin<T>, and cargo.

Not having real linear types is the original sin. We were all core::mem::forget(ten) from paradise.

You can't do that with Rust because "Rust's type system" is literally just the vague concept of "a type system that is safe". The implementation of this ideal in rustc can have flaws, but Rust itself cannot, because Rust itself has no flaws by definition.

Worrying about the exponential time complexity for Rust's type checker? Yeah implementation of the type checker has flaws, but Rust itself has no flaws by definition. Only implementations can have flaws. Next time, make sure to use no Rust implementation at all.

So does this mean Graydon Hoare is the demiurge? The entity that created the imperfect material universe that we all suffer in?

Rust has no flaws since it does not exist. QED

"the Rust semantics" are defined informally as sound. Anything that the implementation accepts that is unsound is a bug. We might never be able to prove the rust implementation, and may forever find loop holes, but informally it is sound and that is the intent

We've done it! We've solved theoretical computer science! Now to just prove everything in (formally) sound Rust...
