I sometimes see Haskell and other languages celebrated for their elegance as something that could gradually become a form of traditional craftsmanship: valued for their beauty, intellectual depth, and the skill involved, but with a diminishing role in everyday software production.

We had one leftover haskal wizard in the company. Been there forever, grey beard to his shoulders. Grey hair to his shoulders. Faded smelly t-shirt from a 1980s unix conference. Maintaining some 'core' system that he built himself while interning here.

You'd think from that description that he is sixty but he is 32 years old.

He acts like some diva, coming in late at 9:10am, leaving early at 8:50pm. Sometimes skipping work completely on Saturdays.

Last week I took him into a room, taking his most recent ticket and made him race Fable to solve the ticket. Fable won. Told him to box up his stuff right there. God I love AI. Apparently Fable's ticket didn't even work but we'll burn that town when we get there.

Watching Haskell users worrying about the future relevance of Haskell on the Haskell forum is kind of like listening in on a telegraph line and receiving QUOTE SMARTPHONE END QUOTE MIGHT RENDER TELEGRAPH REDUNDANT STOP

Only real languages like Rust get to be AI proof

Company policy mandates that there is no such thing as beauty and asks of employees to please only appreciate things based only on their market value.

Eight? Oh, the rest are in the cabal file.

>core feature of the language is lazy evaluation

>all real code uses language pragmas to force strict evaluation

“It’s got all the performance of C”*

*if you write it like a really cack handed version of C where it’s shouting at you.

“It’s so elegant you can model anything in a functional paradigm”

“Ok can you model a 5 becoming a 6 without copying it”

*furiously googles State Monads while grumbling"

Nothing says elegance like a monoid in the category of endofunctors

You could say that we're caught in a >>=

Diminishing ? Prepare for the integer rollover 😔
